Call shot, Call safe Rules for 10 ball

I would be ok with call shot, call safe for all the games, but I am ok with BCA and Valley rules 8 ball, and slop for 9 ball. I don't play pro speed. I play pool for fun. For me its a hobby. Gambling in pool is pretty much dead, but that's a whole different discussion. I'd rather gamble at the casino. Its a whole lot less hassle.

The trickiest rule to get people to use in my experience is the "make the wrong ball, or any ball on a safety, and your opponent can give it back" rule. It's just not something people are used to.

The reasoning there is this, since it's called shot, you can call some crazy ball you can't make and shoot a duck to play safe because you did not make your called ball. Such as this diagram, where you will call the 6 but shoot the 1. If you could not hand the ball back after a miss, the incoming player would be at a disadvantage because of an abuse of the rules. Ability to pass back a shot if you missed a called shot keeps this from happening.

Right that's a good explanation. Or, in the case of safeties, switch the 2 and 6. Then just call safe and make the 1. Now your opponent would have the option to give it back to you. So that easy safe is stopped.

I remember when we started playing 10-ball in our league, we got used to that rule pretty quickly. Adjusting to it is not that big a deal.

We can only give it back though, if the opponent pockets an unintended ball or if the called ball drops in another pocket. Lucky safes are still good if nothing drops.

They are an attempt to reduce luck at the expense of losing the skill of 2 way shots. Not a good trade off imho.

Those rules shouldn't have an effect on two-way shots. Call your shot, and if you miss and get safe, it's still your opponent's shot.

That depends on the rules you are playing. I don't think the original rules were that way and that's why I liked them.

Rules, schmules! Let's see how tough we can make it to play an already difficult game. As for me, I'd prefer to play Ten Ball with 9-Ball rules. Just adding one ball makes the game about 20-25% harder. No reason to mess with the rules to see how hard you can make it or for anyone to understand what's going on. I say Keep It Simple and let them play some pool. We did it that way for years in the Bigfoot tourney and it's worked out just fine, with the absolute best players being the consistent winners. By the way, it's far more rare to make the ten ball on the break as well. It might happen once a day, if that!

I agree. This is a huge part of my playing strategy, and has been for 40 years. It diminishes an opponents confidence, if and when you miss, they are always looking from the wrong side of the next ball in order. Huge in 9 Ball...in 10 Ball,Monstrous. IMHO, also.

Call shots take skill out of the game...call with option takes even more.

take all the luck out of the game then the best player wins every time. so who wants to even bother playing.

the idea is to add more of a luck factor so more players have a chance to win then more interest happens.

if true skill was the draw then chess would be played for big money tournaments and be more popular.

pool is barely hanging on in this world for that reason. no money in tournaments because the entry fees arent large enough and no one without being one of the top three or four would pay much to enter.

put more luck into the game more and many would take the risk and the pot would be bigger. the best would not win as often but would win more money overall.

to have the best players in the world make about as much as a bus driver in new york or seattle makes is a shame.
and to have the very best of the best make less than an average doctor or lawyer is terrible.

But strange things happen. Remember this from the the 3rd Bigfoot event (at the 2013 Southern Classic)?

I don't know if you noticed the last sentence in post #1 -- something quite strange.

The 10-ball was pocketed on the break 10 times in a foot-rail pocket in the last 2 streamed matches (11 times in the last 3 matches)! It seemed to go toward the right (from the player's view) foot-rail corner pocket regularly.

In the Bigfoot Challenge at the last Derby City Classic, pocketing the 10-ball in any pocket on the break counted as a win. Fortunately, it did not count as a win at the Southern Classic if the 10-ball went in either of the foot-rail pockets. Otherwise, we would have witnessed a real travesty in the semi-finals and finals.

What do you all think about these rules for 10 ball? just 10 ball, not 8 or 9 ball.

Totally agree, not only does it remove the luck factor, I also believe this would be better for a general audience as well, since most people like to see "shotmaking" and this format emphasizes going for the shot.

They do. Under call safe rules, the shot can be passed back after a miss if the layout is unfavorable for the incoming player.

Call shot safe ( I call it the 'option') is the worst thing...it doesn't promote shot making...
...it promotes safety play.

You want to see shot making, go back to the old 'roll out' rules.
