Call Shot/Call Safety strategy against players of different speeds

While we're on this topic, I love one of the rules Earl used when he played Shane on the 10-footer: 10-ball has to be the last ball off the table. You can combo it in, but it comes right back up and spots.

to "fix" the game, let's go all out to make sure "no shot is left behind".

There's one addition to the "call shot/safety" rules they really should use.

TWICE a game the players should be allowed to call a "two way shot," this would include banking a ball cross side, and at the same time playing shape on the next ball AND safe if you miss.

The 'Two Way Shot' is the most strategic, entertaining and skillful shot and it's been taken out playing "one foul" AND this new "call shot/safety" (or whatever they call it). If we're going to "fix" the game, let's go all out to make sure "no shot is left behind".

agreed, pool DOES need to man up

players should never be rewarded for missing shots, we should be punished, i love call shot call safety, it's the end of slop as we know it imo

The best decision is to play your own game, no matter who your opponent is. Playing under WPA rules, which do not have the chance of giving back missed pocketing attempts, I'd probably adjust my game according to my opponent.
A guy who takes a shot at every ball he sees the paint of: Play a lot of safeties
A guy who plays a lot of safeties himself: Take a shot at everything I see the paint of + easy jump shots

Irving simply said "always make your opponent earn every Game!"

When Mike Sigel was in Dallas he told me that Irving Crane gave him advice that positively influenced his impressive tournament career. Irving simply said "always make your opponent earn every game!" in other words "let your game be their teacher".

The reason I decided it was moot is because I am already choosing shots depending on who I am playing and a change in the format will not affect that. There are a number of players in the league who will run out if you leave them anything. Of course, there are players who will have a difficult time running out even with a decent layout. I was thinking of passing back a shot that was open but a difficult runout. Also, instead of calling a pocket on a kick shot I will probably call a safety just in case I get a roll where I actually leave the kick safe. I know there are a number of players in the league who will call a shot that has no chance of being made to keep there rating down (misses in USAPL league tend to reduce a rating a tad). Not sure of the exact algorithm.

One comment about Crane. I believe his main game was Str8 pool even though he was great at all games and I believe the interaction between players was reduced whereas in rotation games it happens more frequently unless you are playing at the highest levels which I am not. As you are running out it is all about the balls. When and if you screw up your position, it is all about your choice of how best to put your opponent in a difficult position. His/her speed enters into this decision for me.

Excited about the up coming spring session.

I'm no pro, but I'd rather be on the table kicking/banking/shooting than being in the chair waiting. I call almost every ball if there is not an obvious safe. I'll intentionally play 2 way shots leaving myself a kick if I miss. Kick shots are fun shots :).

I don't think texas express rules should be played by pro's. Hell I think them playing 9 ball at all is like chess champions playing checkers. On the other hand how many balls do pro's $hit in? I bet not many. I know in apa leagues being a 9 I rarely get a lucky ball not do I see the other high numbers getting lucky either.. it's always the lower level players. I always felt better players didn't crap balls in because a) I play balls pocket speed there for I'm not going to go and extra 2 or 3 rails when I miss and b) I don't miss by a half a diamond or more when I do miss which seems to make it less probable a ball will go in another hole.

I believe it would be more strategic as long as the 2-way shot is called and only can be called on bank shots to bring an element of creativity to add to the entertainment value.

ONE of these two way shots a game in the Professional CueSports rules.

There's another "Two Way Shot" that needs to be addressed. The one where you play a shot and a carom at the same time. This is also a great part of the game and we allowed ONE of these two way shots a game in the Professional CueSports rules.

This would mean that you could call the "one in the corner," and at the same time call the "nine in the side" (this applies to any ball)......making either one is a legal shot.

So if I used up my two way carom shot to make a ball, I can still use my twice a set jump cue use, my double use two way bank shot a 3 foul rule and getting to call my opponent a nasty word 3 times a night and 4 on Saturdays? As long as you don't go over the going to the soda machine once every 2 hours rule which incurs a penalty of a -1 on the two way shot allowance but adds in to the 3 allowable bathroom breaks during a tournament. All that of course is negated if you don't use the 4 allowed taps on the tip and 2 towel use to dry hands which gives you an extra bathroom break after the first 4 hours of the tournament on the same day you did not use your tip tool or towel and 1 extra two way shot for the next 4 sets you play within the first 3 hours of the day.

As you can see, there may be a bit too many side rules for comfort if you keep going :p;)
