I'd first like to give credit to the picture I'm referencing. It comes from the website of Denali Cues.

Now the issue at hand. Does anyone here have any level of familiarity with the Camatillo Rosewood pictured? This is some of the most beautiful stuff I've seen, but don't recall having seen it used in a cue before. I'd love to have this stuff in a sneaky pete type cue. Wonderful figure

If I'm not mistaken Camatillo is the Mexican version of Kingwood.
I like the Brazilian stuff much better myself.
Excellent cue wood.....touch oily.....but a solid wood from the rose family.

The piece pictured looks to have a sap contrast in it..

Thanks for the response boss. I love the contrast in color in the stuff pictured. Kingwood is gorgeous stuff from what I've seen of it.

Mexican kingwood also called camateo or camatillo seldom has that much sapwood. It can be a beautiful purple when first cut but it will eventually lose the purple color and end up very dark. On top of that, it is a real pain to work with as the alkaloid oils in the wood bleed so much the gluing and finishing can be a real problem.

Like most of the rosewoods it make a sweet playing cue.

I guess I should have said Brazilian Kingwood........
Paul's right.....it likes to bleed so you have be careful when gluing and sealing.

Dave is right about the Brazilian kingwood, it just looks better with age, whereas the Mexican kingwood looks best when new.

Camatillo can also bleed into the finish long after the cue is done.

Here is a pic of a cue I made this spring with a Camatillo handle and a Brazilian forearm. As a side note: I have an excess inventory of camatillo if anybody is interested in buying some turning squares or rounds.

Very nice. Question...what's the shaft made out of?

Camatillo

what is the price on 17+" camatillo squares without any sap?

ARNOT BOUGHT ALL THOSE. CAMATILLO WITHOUT SAPWOOD IS VERY RARE.
I LIKE IT WITH SOME SAPWOOD AS IT MAKES FOR A NICE CONTRAST WITH THE PURPLE FIGURING.
