Just a funny bit.
My friend, D, and I are playing some 9 ball on my table. Just some time-wasting, no-money, race-to-five nineball. We have played together a lot and are evenly matched, so we soon wind up hill-hill on the first set. D is a bar player and likes no-call, so a nine on the break is a win. It's my break and the cue ball jumps up in the air after hitting the one ball. One big bounce of the table and it lands on the cushion, spinning near a point on the side pocket. The nine ball cruises slowly past just as the cue ball falls off the cushion onto the table. The nine hits the cue ball and caroms into the side pocket. I win!
Next set, we are again hill-hill. I am on the nine, and have a cross-bank kick into the side pocket. There's a good chance of scratching (and no way to play leave), so I shoot pocket speed. The nine softly bumps a point and stops directly in front of the side pocket, maybe a half- inch out. The cue ball rolls between the points of the other side pocket and stops at the very edge of the shelf. We waited for several seconds, expecting the thing to drop, it was so far back on the shelf. The cue ball stayed up, so D lines up, fingers on the rail, jacked up a bit for a stun shot. He's taking short practice strokes, when the cue ball drops into the pocket. We're both surprised, and I'm thinking, "Did I scratch and D has BIH? Did D scratch and I have BIH?" D is just standing there motionless with his head hanging, looking down into the pocket. "Do you have another cue ball?" he asked, "I think this one is retarded."
