I have been playing for a year and am trying to get use of proper control of english I was wondering If I played this shot correctly because I had nothing else to do since the natural direction was blocked, if anybody can provide some comments please do....

Looks like it worked out ok, good shot. It wouldn't have been my first choice though. I'd have used low right, keeping in mind the 4 ball could be a problem so stroke accordingly. Another option is less left and come down under the 5 ball. I think you took the most difficult route but it worked.

Draw or 2 rail behind 7. Either should work quite nicely.

The trick to this shot is the follow, you've got to get the cueball to curve into the the rail as shallow as possible without it clipping the 9 as you come off the first rail with inside. Use slightly more follow than inside (about 11:00) and control the speed so you get the topspin to catch asap after hitting the object ball. Stroke straight thru with a firm smooth strike and learn the speed. If you put the exact shot in the diagram as it was on the pool table, this shot is not tough, and the stroke required for this shot is a must have if you want to be a better player.

WHAT IS THE STROKE REQUIRED?

I don't think that there is ever a "right or wrong" whern it comes to something like this. You have to do whatever you feel comfortable doing.

THEN PLAY SAFE. WHY WOULD YOU ATTEMPT A SHOT THAT YOU CANNOT SHOOT ACCURATELY AND CONSISTENTLY? MADNESS.

I guess you’re being sarcastic. But what’s the point of playing at all if we do not try new things?

The shot shown wouldn’t be my first choice I’d prefer to draw with right spin. But, he made a great shot with top left. Now the next question would be did he get out?

Enough of this bottom right bs.

That would take a pretty good stroke because of where the tangent line is, and then you have the possible 4 in the way.

Just use follow and make the 3 in the upper left corner.

I wouldn't expect to see the inside english follow from a player at any level. The odds of getting the shape aren't good enough.

The outside english draw makes plenty of sense, subject to the one limitation that theres'a slight chance you'll hook yourself behind the four if your stroke isn't precise, a chance you probably need to take here.

The follow to play the three from the short side is also reasonable. This choice gets the obstructing object balls out of the equation on the one, but leaves you with a fairly tough assignment getting from the three to the four.

My choice is outside english draw.

bs? the angle's good enough that it doesn't take much stroke to get it back off 1 rail with outside draw...the follow shot isn't even an option to me

To me, this is the shot to take: low right and the 4-ball really doesn't matter, it's perfectly enough to finish a little bit higher for the 3-ball. Plus, this shot is much easier than shooting with follow with left english.

5railkick's plain follow would seem to me to take the cueball into the 7-ball, unless you have the touch to play the cueball between the 7 and the long rail. You have to remember that the harder you shoot with follow/draw, the longer the curve before the follow/draw kicks in. So the harder you shoot, the closer you're going to get to the 7. And to me it seems there no way to go up and down the table with soft follow.

Soft/medium follow without english would take you to A but wouldn't give enough speed to reach the other end of the table. Hard stroke would take the cb to B and possibly around the 7, not easy though.

only reason I even went for it is because my friend said I could not do it...it was mostly ego...but I wanted to see if it would work. and i may have not diagramed it correctly but draw on the shot was blocked another ball blaocking my path

I think the only tough part about the inside english shot is avoiding clipping the 9 after the cueball hits the first rail. Maybe I am seeing the angle of the shot different than you in the diagram, but I shot this a couple times today and it's not that tough.
