Can I get a decent cue for less then $150.00? I asked in regards to <100 a few weeks ago and was told that there really wasnt much available in that range. If I bump to 150 can i get a good cue? I am not looking for aoperance, just great playability. Thanks for any advice, esp if you have particular model lines in mind. Thanks

PS. I look in here in for sale, but my God, you guys like VERY expensive cues :)

Joss cues off ebay, and think there is one seller on here that could probably get you something close.

Lucasi would be my second choice at that price range.

I have hit with Lucasi cues in that price range that have hit surprisingly good.

Don't buy a cue on ebay or anywhere online for that matter. You MUST look at it, feel it, roll it on a table and hit a ball with it before you buy. You can get a very nice cue for $150.00 or you can get a piece of junk. Bowling and Billiards has some very nice cues in that price range and some junk. Roll the cue on the table then take it apart and roll the shaft and butt on the table. Some high dollar cues cannot pass this test because they have been machined poorly. If you see daylight between the cue and the cloth when you roll the butt. That's not good. The shaft should roll cleanly without any wobble and when put together it should roll perfectly.

rolling on table

i don't always agree with the rolling on the table.you have to be careful checking that way.i you have a cue with a wrap.sometimes the wrap may have a slight high or low spot,it can be trickey.just thought i throw in my 2 cent
p.s another option for a cue in that range is a dale perry off of e bay.there are some that have a very low starting bid and if your lucky, one might slip by and you can get it.they usually come with 2 shafts and they play good, regaurdless of the opinions on how he did his dealers.also it would be brand new,a custom if you will, and if you had a problem, you could get it handled.i have dealt with dale and he stands by his work, and his dpr shafts play ,in my opinion,as good if not better than predator.if that don't work,pm me and i'am sure i can put you into sonemthing.good luck

why I generally agree that you should try everything before you buy, it will be really hard to find my first choice at a retail store for that price. Easy to find fury, players, and lucasi though. Joss cues are very consistent, so at the least hit with a joss with at least a 13 mm shaft (new shafts are standard 13.25mm).

I'll take it you know the poster, and he's or she is close to bowling and billiards. In my neck of the woods your choices would be limited buying retail, though I do believe its always best to give the local place the business if you want them to stay in business.

You should be able to get a NEW nice basic Viking or McDermott cue in that price range. Won't be fancy but they they will be well made and give you good quality. You can also look at Schmelke cues as a third option. Particularly if you would want a cue that would be stiffer hitting than normal.

You should also be able to find a custom maker who offers their sneaky-pete hustler style cues at that price. Then you get the very best of playability & quality. I remember buying new Tim Scruggs sneaky's at that price...not anymore though. Occasionally I'll have a used Varney sneaky that I take in on trade that I'd entertain selling at that price.

Have you had a cue in the past? I think that may matter, because there are many decent, inexpensive cues out there. Say for instance that you once had a Muecci that you realy liked, then you would not want to get a stiff hitting cue. You really do have many to pick from. Low end Joss, Lucasi, Fury are all good choices. I picked up a Players j/b for something to just bang around. My other cues were stolen, and I had to play with Players for some time. It hit real well, to my surprise. If you don't mind buying used, I would go with a Joss or McDermott in that price range. If you do not like it, those two would be easier, in my opinion, to resell and get most of your money back. Good Luck!

I would not go with a Schmelke if I were you. Most people that walk in a pool hall with a Schmelke get laughed at for some reason. I think it is the big brass joint. I have nothing bad to say about them, but for some reason they have a certain stigma surrounding them. I think most would agree with me. I thought I save you the embarrassment.

Lucassi all the way.

I have hit with just about every damn cue there is, and the lucassi is hard to beat. Real solid and good feel.

L-98 MSRP ??? / paid $375.00 - Was selling for $300.00

Was selling mine before it got stolen, the shaft still had the original wax, very little hits...:(

a pool cue is entirely personal preference, my first cue was a 70.00 no name cue that had a whippy shaft. i have since owned a few dufferins that hit pretty good for the price, also a low end viking which i also liked, i now play with a bob frey sneaky pete. over the years ive owned 5 cues and have been playin tournaments for about the same amount of time, each year my game got better and better but it wasnt because the cue i played with its because what i did with the cue. my advice to you is buy a cue you like in the hundred dollar range from a reputable cue maker (mcdermott viking lucasi) all are well made production cues for the price. than try out different tips. my whippy no name cue turned into quite the shooter once i put a moori med on it.

There may be a "stigma" to Schmelke's in your area. But certainly not in my neck of the woods. I have never known any player in my area laugh at anyone who played with a Schmelke. I guess were more respectful of each other in my region.

Besides which not all Schmelke's come with the super brass joint. I often sell Schmelke cue models with standard 3/8-10 phenolic joints and 5/16-14 SS joints. You can get Schmelke cues configured just about any way you want. But because so many of their cues are made from denser hardwoods for the butt sections and their shaft tapers are a bit shorter than normal you will generally get a stiff hit even without the super brass joint. Overall for the budget cue buyer wanting American made quality the Schmelke's are an excellent value.

Players or Lucasi!!!! low end cues that Are suprisingly good for their prices. Lucasi makes a beautiful Sneaky Pete for ... 119 retail. I've shot with one, and i wanted it, but didnt have the $$$ at the time.

I agree, my first cue was one from Wally World, i thought it was the best LOL, then i went into the mall and Got a Viper cue a sale the cue and a pool case, i change up the tip and made my own taper on it and its still my best cue. My Girlfriend bought me a McDermott Cue Navigator 2 almost a $800 cue and i have never played with it yet well i tested it out and i like it but i would rather much use my Viper cue, a cheap $70 cue. A teammate of myne owns a $1000 Viking cue and i can't play with it weird, But i have always wanted a Lucasi cue.

When Buddy Hall BCA Hall of Famer and Tom Rossman World Masters Trick Shot Champion both tried Lucasi cues for the first time they were amazed at Lucasi cues great performance and solid hit. Lucasi cues feature exotic woods, 15 inch pro taper, pressed Irish Linen, Triangle tips, high impact Ivorine 3 ferrules and real inlays quoted directly from Ozones catalog now that sounds impressive :D LOL

hows come nobody has mentioned a Cuetec Cue in this thread? if you dont mind the Veltex grip you can get a decent playing cue for less than $150. not sure if you can get one with the Irish Linen wrap for $150 or so.

how new are you to the game? have you had a decent cue before?

from your post you sound like your pretty new to the game, so if you're not quite experienced, trying a cue before you buy it is a bit pointless, because you don't really know what you want at this stage. hell ive been playing a good while now and know a hell of a lot about the game, but tbh i dont really know exactly what i want yet.

IMO you should just get yourself a cuetec off ebay. i still play with mine and i'm used to it, hence i haven't upgraded yet. Plus they're very strong and durable they will stand a lot of mistreatment. lol mine was whacked off a lamppost and all i have a is a slight dent in the butt!

plus when you upgrade in the future you can use your cuetec as a break cue so it'll still have some use. they make decent break cues cus they're solid and strong.

consistency is the key. any half decent quality cue will do tbh. just remember the player is more imprtant than the cue!

however if you can get yourself a better quality cue second hand like a mcdermott or a joss then good luck.
