Without getting into the issue of drills, I do think you are correct in highlighting the importance of mastering as many shots as possible.

The bigger your tool box of shots, the higher your runs are going to be. The important thing to note though is that for each one of those shots, you've got to be able to make the ball and be able to do a variety of things with the CB. When your repertoire of shots is large enough, you run more ball more consistently.

In my experience it's the part about moving the CB that takes the longest to learn. Just being able to stab the ball in isn't good enough. You've got to be able to get the ball in and move the CB effectively. When you can do that, things get easier and you can often take a slightly uncomfortable shot so you open up other balls and play easier patterns that minimize CB travel.
