Can you partially refinish a wrapped cue???

I recently bought a custom cue that has a small chip in the finish of the butt-sleeve. The rest of the butt section is unblemished and the wrap is still good. My question is... can the butt be partially refinished?... perhaps by masking off the wrap and the forearm?... leaving only the butt-sleeve and the butt-cap to be stripped and resprayed?

I would think that it would be possible... just seems like it would be a waste of time/money to have to strip and refinish the whole butt section... and also to re-wrap it in this case... all just to eliminate a small chip in the finish.

I should add that this cue is not my player... but rather a cue to take out of the case periodically to admire/fondle... and potentially to sell/trade down the road a bit... so I'd like to get rid of the chip now if the cost of the refinish isn't too high.

TIA, cd.

If you know the type of finish on the cue you should be able to have just the chip repaired.

Yes. this gets done very often. In modern times, the use of Delrin butt caps, that had no finish, has really declined. These were nearly indestructible. Most butt caps now a days get chipped and broken easily and need fixed or replaced. When doing this the collar and cap need to be refinished.

You'll need to consider there may be a difference in the new finish vs. the old finish, even if you match the materials. Some materials "yellow" more than others, but you wouldn't realize it until you only refinish part of a cue. I did a buttsleve refinish for a buddy on an older Predator. He didn't want the entire thing refinished, just the area that a quarter chewed up when he dropped it in his case, then tried to pull the butt out (DOH!). Anyway, I'm sure I didn't use whatever Predator uses, I use PPG's Omni Clear. The cue is ebony/phenolic with ivory-looking points in the buttsleve and forearm. After the partial refinish, the points in the buttsleve were considerably whiter. He didn't mind, and I did warn him about it up front.

Dave, it should not be a problem, depending on how close the chips are to the wrap itself. Remember, a wrap can be lightly sanded starched and repressed if it is Linen.

Any qualified repair person should be able to do with no probs.
It sure would make things a little easier and better for the end result to know what type/approx how old the finish is on the cue now.
Worst case.......have to shoot just the back end.

Yes, it can be done.
