Carbon Fiber Pads

What are the advantages of a carbon fiber pad between the tip and ferrule? I just ordered a OB shaft and they come with a fiber pad, I plan on replacing the tip with a Kamui but not sure if I should try to put a fiber pad back on (not even sure how to do it). Those that have used them what are your thoughts?

First, thanks for buying an OB cue Shaft!

Now to answer your question.

All OB cue shafts come with a Carbon Fiber pad between the tip and the ferrule.

These pads are different than the typical fiber pad in that they are made from Carbon Fiber. The typical pad is made out of vulcanized fiber, also known as fish paper.

You must use a Carbon Fiber pad on all our cue shafts or you risk ferrule damage. What the pad does is prevent any spreading of the base of the tip or the top of the ferrule. The pads don't really change the way the cue shaft plays.

The pads don't have to be removed to install a new tip. In fact, if it's done properly, you can replace the tip many times before the pad would need to be replaced. We have complete instructions on our website, http://www.obcues.com/pages/Care-and-Repairs.html. Take a look, and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to call us.

Thanks

Thanks for the heads up! I just put a tip on a OB Classic for a friend of mine and didn't put a pad on. Just ordered a couple pads to rectify the situation. Very good info on your web site. I can't wait to get my new shaft, Thanks!

Actually the ones at seyberts.com are not CARBON fiber. I can't find them on the OB website to order, I checked in the accessories section but couldn't find them. RBC can you point us in the right direction? Thanks!

I'm interested to learn where to get carbon pads too.

that's what is true about any fibre pad. I agree carbon can sustain more impact than fish paper, but don't think that's a big issue. So why necessarily carbon for OB shafts? Do you have negative experience with ordinary fibre pads?

Atlas also has them in black & red.

These are not carbon fiber, they are vulcanized fiber. Basically it's fish paper. If it only says "Fiber" or "Fibre", and does not say "Carbon Fiber", then it's most likely just vulcanized paper fiber.

The Carbon Fiber pads that we use are cut here in our factory. We machine them out of carbon fiber sheet.

I'm sorry they're not on the website, but you can just call us to order them. We're working on adding more of the accessories and such to the site, but we've been working on lots of other new things too.

Thanks!

Which size are the carbon fiber pads you have, pre trimmed to the size of your shafts, or a standard size of f.ex. 14mm? Any idea how much more protection the carbon pads give compared to the normal fiber pads?

Looking forward for the release of the new cue line :-)

Our pads come in both, 1/32" and 1/16" thick. The diameter is larger than the 12.75mm diameter of the OB-1 and OB Classic. They really need to be machined in place.

As for protection, the biggest difference is the tensile strength. We were after control of spreading or mushrooming on the bottom of the tip which would cause ferrule problems for us.

The new cue line is coming along nicely. All early testing has all been very impressive, and we look forward to the launch in March.

Thanks

Ferrules?

Anybody try using carbon fiber as a ferrule material yet? It's light right? Would give a hard hit, which some people like right? I presume, the hardness of the hit might be dependent on the bonding agent used though.
