I found this article in a scrapbook that I bought at an auction. The only reference to a date was a copyright 1930 on a cartoon on the other side of the page. I thought it was pretty cool and impressive that they would go through the effort of building a glass cage that big. I'm guessing HVAC was pretty primitive in those days!!
Does anyone else have any knowledge of this phenomena of "chilling of the ivory"?
The idea was that cold ivory balls would not react as well as warm ones. The instructions that came with the old ivory sets had you let them get used to the room temperature for about a week after shipment before you played with them. I suspect that the real problem was that the table was damp and/or the rubber was cold. The solution the Europeans found was to heat the table. I hope Diamond succeeds in their heated pool table experiments.
