Carom shaft for pool cue

I just started playing 3c and love the game. I'm a 14.1/9 ball player at heart but would like to play 3c more. Is there anyway I can find a carom shaft for a 3x8/10 pool cue? I don't want to spend the money for a whole cue.

Thanks.

Bout 150ish

I still have mine

He can make it match your cues butt dia with whatever tip size you might need

The Tiger Carom shafts seems to be good and not too expensive. Be sure to get the skinny one and always go for LD. Even 10,5mm is fine.
You will be doing a lot of extreme english shots...

I'd not get a shorter shaft, just take the standard size - depending on your size of course :)

In the end I was rather good with my regular LD pool shaft in carom (not 3C though) and gave a lot of players a run for their money.
Dont even try with a regular or high deflection shaft...

Gotcha. I was playing with my regular playing cue for about 3-4 hours and one of my friends who's a big 3c told me you better use a house cue because you'll batter your tip.

I can build the shaft for you, 3/8X10. If you are an occasional 3-C player I do not recommend a tip below 12mm, a smaller tip makes it much harder to control the English. I do not know a single 3-C player at any level who plays with smaller than 11.5mm, straight-rail and balkline players sometimes go down to 11. Given the joint diameter of most pool cues, e.g. 840 or 850, a carom shaft will not be as stiff as it would be on one of my cues where the joint is 880, but it will be much more stiff than a pro-taper pool cue. my website is caromcues.com if you want to check it out.

All Carom'ers I know play 11,25mm, one old guy is using 10,5 "as in the olden days".

Dear poster, dont be afraid of going small! It will tremendously help with deflection and control.
Some productions shafts explicitly for 3C will include some kind of carbon inlet below the wood (liek a Mezz Hybrid or what's it called?). Wouldn't use a single piece maple, but only laminated for additional robustness.

But of course, we are European and know how to handle a stroke, see Mosconi cups :D

NastyNate13... You can Checkout McDermott I-3 shaft

https://www.billiards.com/accessories/mcdermott-i-shafts

Also Paul Frankel ( ProfessorQball) might have a shaft laying around, as he was selling Carom Cue with 3/8 x 10 threads.a few year back.

Or you can PM me about one I might have in my closet!

But then any cuemaker / cue repairman could make you a shaft with your spec and European taper.

Pardon my short term memory, Ron...isn't the shoonI taper yours? Well, yours and mazin's!

A great taper for a pool player playing 3c, imo.

Black-Balled.... Before Ron answer ,,,, I believe Dieckman built Mazin taper before Ron!!!

But it would be nice if Mazin (AZBilliards Member and USBA President) would post informations on his taper spec. and explain how and why he use that taper.

Can't speak for Mazin but before I selected the taper I wanted, Dieckman sent me both the Mazin and Conical. I chose the Mazin taper. Going back a few months earlier Dennis asked me to take measurements on my Harry Sims cue since I told him Harry recommended just a tiny bit more flex. Turns out the measurements came very close to the Mazin taper.

Harry tried to make a 3C shaft for my pool cue but like Kilby said before, the joint wasn't big enough to make the shaft stiff enough. Going with the Mazin taper and a pool cue would make matters worse.

Regarding using a house cue. If you find one that doesn't have the pro taper they can make for a fairly decent 3C cue.

Mazin and I designed the Shooni taper, and I supplied him 8-10 shafts while he was playing my cue before he turned to Tiger. I even tapered a couple of Tiger shafts to that taper. People can claim what they want, OK by me, I'm comfortable with what I know.

True story -- the older Valley cues had a good stiff taper, worked quite well for 3-C. Dufferins tended to be too slender.

And I'm sure Mr Shooni owns several other cues (IE Dieckman).

What I'm trying to say is

1.- Players on that level can play well with any cue.
2.- They have to use what they are paid for to use.

Anyway, if he plays with Kilby, Adam, Dieckman, Predator or Walmart cues, it doesn't have nothing to do with the quality of your cues.

I'm sure he prefers to play with CERTAIN cues, in this case your cues.

Never had one in my hands but they look awesome.
I doubt that Ron pays Mazin to play with his cue....I know I never did and he finally replaced his Dieckman with a Kilby. I know I GAVE Mazin every cue I have made for him [except the first one for which he paid, as I recall, $225 way back when, BUT THAT WAS WHEN I COULD STILL BEAT HIM LEFT HANDED] and I am sure that is all Ron did. Now as to the TIGER stuff, Maz better be getting at least $10,000 a year or he cut a bad deal.....
.

Again Maybe Mazin will let us know. I also believe Shooni won the National in 2006 with a Dieckman Cue. .

Nasty Nate13 if you cannot find a shaft, then consider a Schuler Cue by Noel http://mendozacues.com/

Whether new or used Great cue used by Numerous 3 Cushion Players, and shafts for numerous billiard games can be obtained. No one can argue about Schuler Cues. This to get thread back on track.

Ron Kilby made me a 11.75mm 3/8x11 carom shaft to fit my South West and Diveney and another big wood pin shaft for my Helmstetter CCS.
I am totally happy with the shafts. Price was very reasonable and pretty quick service.
I play 3C with Diveney/Kilby shaft 90% of the time.
The other 10% Helmstetter CCS/Kilby shaft plays fine but I don't care for the bigger butt diameter. But that is a different subject.
I say give Kilby a try since you are just starting out. Good price and very friendly service.
