Last night I was playing this guy and he left me with the following layout. I chose to play safe, hit the one to the rail and back up table and parked the CB. My opponent tried kicking the 9 off from the short rail to the upper left corner pocket. he missed and ended up leaving me an easy out.

But after the match one of the players in the premiere division commented that I should have shot the 4 in the corner caroming off the 9 instead of the safety. Too me that seemed like a low percentage shot, what do you think?

I guess this is 8 ball. The way it shows in the diagram, the 4 can't go in straight.

I would do this, leave the 1 hanging by the corner pocket and not letting him see the 9. A lot of times I would have no patience and went for Page 2, especially when I am in a bar with lots of girls, Pg 2 is a no-no:

I guess I should clarify my question, I won the game playing safe, but a guy that was watching said that I should have tried caroming the 4 in off then 9 then gone for the 1 and 8.

My question is, how many people would consider the carom as a viable shot.

I think that you did the right thing. Carom shots are tough and I don't see how that one is even possible the way it is set up there. If you don't have an easy out then play safe until you do. Good job!

The shot you took was the right shot and this is how eightball should be played. Especially if you play ball in hand.

The only way I would take a high risk shot is if I was on the hill, and the player I was shooting needs an AMBULANCE to catch up in the match. Then again, I was getting the last three against Bob (Black Bart) Ogburn, I was on the hill, he needed 6 games, I got cocky and busted a cluster up and missed, Never came back to the table. This guy got out from EVERYWHERE, playing the worst shape, shooting every ball in the wrong pocket. Needless to say I learned my lesson. Shooting smart is definitely the way to go, especially in 8-Ball. And especially if the player you are shooting is better than you are.

As for the RAILBIRDS watching, all I can say is I have never lost a game sitting on the rail, criticizing someone elses game. How about you?:D

I think that if the shot is drawn accurately, there is no shot to carom the 4 off the 9. Perhaps the player saw the shot wrong.

With the angle shown, you could have tried to break out the 4 but that's far from a sure thing and I can see the cue ball scratching after it hits both the 4 and 9. I think it might have been better to leave the 1 ball so it isn't blocked by the 8 to the side, but it is reasonably open as you left it.

genius until he gets up an plays someone.

I would have done the same thing as suggested/drawn here.
I also agree that in an 8-ball league/game where you can play safe, a strong defense is just a valuable as strong offense.
I also agree that the guy sitting on the rail giving advice is always a genius until it's his time to shoot. Including me :)

Playing safe and setting up a duck verses just hitting your object ball to another part of the table is a valuable lesson in league pool. The flip side to this and your example isn't a time to play it would be when you are playing safe in league, hit your object ball and lock of two of his open/makable balls.

If this was a 9 ball game, then you could make the 1 and "carom" the 9 in off the 4. What do you think?

Tell you the truth, I think he was just messing with me, I'm pretty sure I've got the balls diagramed correctly and I didn't see an easy carom there. I think he wanted to play after the team match was done, but his wife (who is on my team) wanted to leave early.
