My wife just flew US Airways and had to check her cues. She had a nice - locked travel case for them and had no problems.
Good luck,

I really don't think you have a choice in the matter to check it or not. it's on the TSA list of banned carry on items.

Since your cues fit in your large luggage case I bubble wrapped mine and put them in the suitcase along with the other items in my cue case on the way to BCA. You can carry on your cue case just not with any items in it. I had no problems carrying my case on the Alaska Airlines flight.

Have it mailed to yourself where you are staying and insure it. Thats what I did when I went out of town.

I know it's the law, but this seems like an awful lot of trouble and extra expense to take your pool cue on a trip to play in a tournament. I wonder what genius decided pool cues were dangerous and put them on the list of excluded items from airplanes. A walking cane could be as dangerous as a pool cue, but they aren't excluded!

All you have to do is charter a small plane or jet and you can carry on anything you want.
This can be a good alternative that I've used...split up among everyone that can fit it can be cheaper and faster too...

I think that is not a bad idea. I use a porper travel case and have not had any problem but I feel like I have just been lucky so far. It would make them less of a target for sure!
