Looks like nice work, please post the finished case I would like to see it.

Not sure what you are asking us for but I would say that the pattern is nice but that you need to work on your alignment. Case makers have some leeway and often seem to get a pass when the decorative work isn't quite right but I don't think it should be that way. I think we all need to pay more attention to how well we are tooling and make sure that it's done right.

If you want to get some real good advice then post your work on the LeatherWorker.net forum.

It's really hard to know what you want us to tell you from this picture. Looks like a good start to something nice though.

i have everything dont except assembly. sewing and rivets. I actually have my friends dad that does apholstery sew the pocket on because he has a better machine than i do. it should be done monday night.

i am making 2 others that will be for sale hopefully this week. Im not trying to get rich off of them just break even. who knows maybe ill be the next justis...jk. Im only looking for like 250 shipped. The case is made out of 4-5 oz leather and i dont skimp on quality materials and it adds up over time. with all the rivets, buttons, dye, finish, leather, and not including all the tools required to make them. I really appreciate a nice case since i started making them myself. it takes alot of time and patience.

oh the pic is kind of an optical illusion. i assure u it is all in a straight line. the only hard part was with the floating pear shaped backrounder pointing out. but this is a case for myself and the next 2 will be for sale. I dyed this one a antique brown which came out like a chocolate color. I was hoping for something lighter but it still looks good.

all the dots are on a straight line and the side pieces are 1 and 7/8ths of an inch off of the center of the dots. im very precise about that

no just 2x4. i dont have a 3x6 case to get measurements from. I will shortly though. if you like the 2x4s when they are done i will get them and make you a 3x6 for sure. same price as the 2x4.

I just want to get my name out there but i cant sell anything that i wouldnt want to buy myself. and i dont want the first impression of my work to be anything other than great. I dont want to rush and produce a lower quality case and be known for that. on the other hand i want it to be affordable.

I see some cases that i would love to have but 600-800 for a case is rediculous. depending on the material involved, ostrich, snake skin, all that stuff is expensive. I would like to make cases with the exotic skins and whatnot but i need to prove that i can make a quality case to you guys first :o) then it will be fun time....

almost done...just need to finish top and bottom and cover tubes

almost done...just need to finish top and bottom and cover tubes

came out darker than i was looking for.....tubes will be covered in same red plush.

this is the first one done and ive learned alot from it. things that will be done differently will be.....

using black thread to sew the pocket on. it is a brown but shines alot in the flash of the camera.

i have to rivet a little further in to tighten up the case when the tubes are inserted. or trim the leather up a little.

other than that i just dont like the brown but some do, ill post pics when completed and let me know if u guys have anything you would like to see done on a case.

..................and that's why I make crap in an overseas factory.

I think that sounded like a shot and was uncalled for.

I was picking on him but it was totally meant as CONSTRUCTIVE criticism. And if the tooling is perfectly aligned then my thoughts on this case are in error.

However my thoughts about the art in general are not.

Sometimes I see cases get a TON of praise on here when there are obvious things wrong with them that wouldn't be accepted in a cue in a million years.

Sorry if my wanting to elevate the art is offensive. It is what it is and I will call it like I see it. Feel free to criticise my work and tear it apart. I will only take whatever you say that is fact and use it to get better. Whatever you say that is emotional drivel will be dismissed.

But if everyone accepts mediocrity when it comes to cases while at the same time expecting near perfection when it comes to cues then it sends the wrong message. It tells everyone and their brother to jump into case making because the people who buy cases aren't discerning enough to expect good quality both in construction and decoration.

Chazdillon these remarks are NOT directed at you;

If a new cuemaker put up a cue on here and it showed a bunch of flaws and he tried to get say $500 for the cue then most of you would be ALL OVER him about those flaws and his unreasonable expectations of getting $500 for an unknown name and exhibiting such flaws.

However if a case is put up which also exhibits such errors then everyone jumps on the bandwagon like it's a new baby praising the case up and down.

Now, I am not advocating that everything shown on here be dissected into minutia but I'd like to see people being a little less enthusiastic over the work that is less than stellar so that it's not equated with the work that's great. Thus it gives the new guys something to shoot for and really helps everyone to be more knowledgeable about what really GREAT leather work is and what needs more practice.

In this way both the customers and the artisans become more in touch with quality and they drive each other to make great things.

So, sorry if that attitude bugs some people. It bothers me too because this idea of quality that I have is with me all the time and causes me to overthink a lot of projects. But I think the point is a valid one nonetheless.

Two things that I see from your pictures that you may want to keep in mind.

The tubes are not yet covered and that will increase the thickness by a lot. You might see that once you have covered the tubes that they fit tighter. Also the middle section of your tubes will have less circumference than the top and bottom once the tubes are covered so you want to put spacers there to even it out and make the circumference the same from top to bottom.

The other thing is that the plush may pill and wear quicker than you think it will. It is a type of fabric that feels great but doesn't like a lot of hard use. The customer could end up with hard spots where the fibers have worn away. I'd make sure that the fabric is going to hold up by doing some rub tests and seeing if the fibers comes loose. If they don't then it's all good.

Lastly, to get your size right on all cases sizes make yourself some small sample pieces to test on. Make the cores about ten inches long and line the tubes. Then you will have a core for each size type to base your patterns off of.

As I said looks really nice and is a good start. How do you plan to make the lid?

im not taking anything to heart that is discussed on here i put it up here for the constructive criticism....so dont worry.

the lid is going to be like an old flowers style with buttons on both sides.

and i have a felt type cloth inside of the fancy stuff so it wont get those hard spots. so it is 2 layers of different fabrics with the base acting as the cushon. the stuff on top is pretty thin and just for decoration, but i think it looks better than the felt. of course if it doesnt hold up well and i do sell it to anyone with this type of interior i would of course take it back and fix it or give them a new one.

other than that i appreciate your help and want everyone to know that im not trying to take over jb's work. it just something i do in my free time and would love to make a great case. im not going to go into production and make a living off of it. I dont see anything wrong with outsourcing if the final product makes you smile when u receive it. should lessons from efren be cheaper because he is from the phillipeans? (or however thats spelled).

but thanks for standing up for me but im real picky and i wouldnt sell the case in the making right now because its kind of a prototype to make sure my measurements are correct and i can finish a case with no flaws. only then will i ever sell anything.

ill tell ya that im not going to sell cases cheap forever, i would love to make super nice cases with all kinds of tooling and exotic skins etc...and yes they wont be cheap but i would like to see more for your money when it comes to a case. flowers cases were around 200 bucks 20 years ago and i know all about inflation but they go for a ton now. and theres not that much work involved in most that i have seen. if i were outsourcing and could make more cases per year then i probably would. I can only make as many as the free time lets me. thats why i would rather spend it with cool materials and only make a few amazing cases per year. but for right now i need to get my name out there and cover the initial investment, so i must work for you guys and earn my status as a case maker. so challenge me u guys
