Cataract Surgery

I had catract surgery on my left eye on Monday (my right eye is dominant). Pain is gone but things still seem misty. Was wondering if anyone had it done and how long it was before they could shoot pool well. Any improvement in game?

It has been two weeks since the surgery was done on my left eye. It took about one week for things to clear up (so to speak). The left eye is functioning well for playing pool. I have noticed that when I get down on a shot I have to blink a few times to get the eye to focus. Both eyes are struggeling to cooperate but in general work well together.

I don't know if its the surgery but it does seem to have had some effect. My game was affected for a few days. I had some trouble with my usual preshot routine, focusing my eyes and follow through. I seem to be pretty much back to where I was though it seems I have to concentrate on the PSR a little more than pre-surgery.

I am having the other eye done today.

The optometrist said to give it up to six months when he checked my eyes last week. He also said, "these things work better in pairs." I am guesstimating a month or so following today's surgery for me to regain my usual approach to playing pool. In essence, I am off my game by a ball or two but still running a rack here and there.

The effects of surgery are present but I think, in the long run, my game will be the same or perhaps slightly better with the new lenses. I was wearing "billiards glasses" prior to surgery and they were very useful. My cataracts developed in about one year and are / were at an early stage. I am of the opinion that cataract surgery was very much worthwhile. The more expensive lens which allow for close, intermediate and distance vision are worth the expense, especially to someone like me who plays pool every day and who reads extensively. I have already found that my visual acuity is better than before with my left eye. I think my brain is getting used to the idea that my left eye (which was substantially weaker) now sees as well or a little better than my right eye.

PS, it is a little weird not wear glasses anymore -- but a nice kind of weird. Sun glasses are a must. An interesting factoid from the optometrist is the distinction between "fun glasses" and "sun glasses." When you try on new sunglasses you should not be able to see your eyes in the mirror, these are sun glasses. If you can see your eyes the tint is not strong enough and they are simply "fun" glasses.

Sometimes a milky-like fluid builds up after an operations. I had to go in again to sit in front of a machine that punched fine holes into my eyeball. Harmless and painless.

If the doctor did his job right, you should be seeing fine no later that a month after the initial operation. UNLESS you had a bad astigmatism and laser surgery done prior to the cataract surgery (like me), then you will be lucky to see 20/20 again. I had one of the best surgeons in the country doing my surgery and he said that they didn't make these lenses in every imagineable size - that he had to make a best guess. Seeing 20/23 in that eye now.

Good luck.
