CB against the rail

What is the best way to shoot when CB is against the rail?

As stressed in the link above, you need to make a firm bridge first. Besides the ones illustrated on Billings' site, I think you should work on open bridges and the fist bridge.

When the CB is right up against the rail, I don't see the use of the V-bridge as it shortens the bridge length substantially. I use the V-bridge when the CB is close to, but not against, the rail.

I feel more confident with a solid open bridge formed by placing the fingers at the back of the table. Also, stay level, make sure the rail won't get in the way of your stroke. Do not jack up unless you have to.

when shooting straight into a cue ball that is frozen to the rail i use an open bridge with just my finger tips on the outside edge of the rail and loosen my front 2 fingers on my grip hand and use more pressure with my ring and pinkie finger to put some downward pressure on the shaft against the rail.

I agree with SeanC here. The V bridge is not the proper bridge, when the CB is frozen on the rail...unless you are shooting at an angle. When shooting straight on, and the CB is frozen, place your fingers on the edge of the table, and use either an open bridge (most recommended and easy to use), or a closed loop bridge. While I don't advocate elevating, I do recommend you elevate the cue to the angle of the bevel on the front of the cushion. This allows for better contact with the top edge of the CB, and discourages miscues (as long as you don't grip too tightly (if you do, the cue will go up in the air on these frozen rail shots).

i had someone recommend to me putting my index and pinky finger on the rail
and my middle and ring finger perpendicular to the rail to press aginst the side of the rail
the thumb makes an open bridge for the cue

your thoughts??

You have to decide for yourself whether a particular bridge meets the goals of a bridge for you. Do you feel it does those things a bridge is supposed to do?
