Chalk Talk

OK. I see a John Schmidt instructional piece in which he gives the simple tip to chalk with the bridge hand. I smack myself in the head, realizing that I've been chalking with the wrong hand for about fifty years without noticing. How could I be so dumb?

Then I went back and looked at the pool gods of my youth: Irving Crane and Willie Mosconi. They chalked right handed! Cisero and Wimpy chalked lefty; Mizerak with his (bridge) right. Lou Butera usually chalks lefty, but uses the right as well. I guess whichever is quicker and closer.

Any ideas? Is there a "right" chalk hand?

There is no "wrong hand" to chalk with. I'm right handed... sometimes I chalk with my left hand and sometime I chalk with my right hand. As long as you get the chalk to smoothly cover the tip, you can chalk with your feet (left or right).

I think you can do just as good with either hand. if I am shooting a routine shot and I already know my game plan for the next few shots or the rest of the game I'll usually chalk with my left hand--- I shoot right handed.
I think this is to keep a pace of shooting that I am comfortable with.

If I am going to use extreme draw or English, then I'll put the butt of the cue on the floor and look at the tip carefully as I chalk it with my right hand, so I make sure it is chalked very well.

Also, if I am waiting for my turn I can keep myself busy by prepping my tip for my next turn, if I get one.

Sometimes many people will chalk and chalk their tip while they are thinking about how they will play the next shot.

NO.not 2 argue with mr 400 but just dont chalk with the hand u rub ur face with lol he wears a glove on his bridge hand HAPPY NEW YEAR

I would think the only difference would be more chalk on the shaft if you use your bridge hand.

I shoot right handed and chalk with my right hand. At the end of the session, some of the fingers on my right hand have some chalk on them. Now, if I chalked with my left hand, I assume at the end of the session I would have chalk on some of the fingers on my left hand. But my left hand is my bridge hand and that's what the shaft on my cue touches. If I chalked left handed, then some of that chalk would wind up on my shaft. No thanks, I'll stick with chalking with my right hand.

I prefer not to chalk with my Bridge Hand (left)

A - it get the shaft dirty when i go to shot a shot
B - it gives me an extra chance to look at the shot more clearly

Hope this helps

Chalking your cue tip doesn't have as much to do with getting chalk on the tip as it does with what your Brain is doing.

Chalking is a Trigger that walks us through our three pre-shot routines. Chalking is the physical Switch that moves us in and out of our Analytical/Creative mind sets.

Not all players use chalk as a Switch but they have something else that works well for them.

Listen to John Schmidt, he knows.....SPF=randyg

chalk

It all depends if your cue is LEFT or RIGHT handed. Happy new year too all:smile:

i use both hands, mostly my bridge hand which is my bridge hand(70% of the time) and 30% the other hand as a guess, I dont think about it. But It is a part of my pre shot routein like Randy said. If I'm thinking about a shot in 1P I tend to keep the chalk on my left hand until I decide the shot then set it down, If i'm running alot of balls I chalk left hand or bridge hand its part of the rythem. When I miss and I'm in the chair I might use a tip tapper and then chalk with my right hand,

Thinking about it more as I type this I usually chalk left handed(bridge) while at the table and right handed when I'm sitting down.

the only down side is my shafts get really dirty, which i just wipe off. Efren chalks similar to me, I noticed that yeas ago-I didnt copy him I just noticed it. He kicks a little better than me:eek::p:thumbup:

I never thought about it and dont while I play, I just but some "butter on the tip" before every shot. As long as your buttered up who cares how you do it. play good and have fun

best
