Chalk Talk...

Couple years ago there was a similar thread. I couldn’t find it using search, but just found my photo from Nov. 11th of 2022.

I recall the O.P. had a similar experience where someone gave him a rough time about how he grooves his cube.

My wear:

Oh hell yeah, this is what I was after!

I am going to do it. I have decided. I am going to make a photozine for the first time in two years, and I am thinking that it covers this idea in the community here in Shanghai. May or may not include cues, as these are quite hard to do justice repeatably and in theme. Thinking to take shots like this, and overlay them with portraiture and potentially action stills.

I have a cloth sack filled with used chalk I’ve gathered over the years and probably have over 50-60 pieces.
Really dunno why I still have this but it’s part of my pool junk. However, I am more fussy about the chalk I
play with and have a small inventory of chalk brands. Based on how long the TAOM and Pagulayan chalk
lasts which so far has been a really long time, and my remaining inventory of new chalk, I will never purchase
chalk again. A have a small stash of Masters pre-flag chalk and I learned my unused box of Brunswick Willie
Hoppe Chalk is very collectible. In any event, Dr. Dave proved all chalks perform alike if & when you chalk after
every shot. It’s all about friction. Nonetheless, I have to say I endorse TAOM chalk that doesn’t mark the cue ball
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. If it's free, and doesn't mess up the table or mark the balls. I'll use that. It's just chalk. I think I went on a chalk related tirade in a thread a while back. Maybe more than once haha

I'm a bit of a hoarder of stuff too. Everything and anything is collectible if you want to collect it! Nice lot you got there.

A friend of mine collects chalk, typically in the 12-piece boxes. He's got over a hundred brands/styles mostly from before WWII -- square, hexagonal, octagonal, round. Brunswick alone had dozens of different types.

As for proper use, I groove my chalk just like Ronnie O'Sullivan.

Right on. Please share when done.

Know you’ve taken some guff for rehashing done to death topic and I respect your thick skin.

I don’t know your experience, but I do know that you’re a stranger in a strange land. I would imagine you might use the forum for some interaction in your native language.

Here’s a jam to start your day or finish it:

Everyday of our life
And that’s all

Admire anyone with the wherewithal to really stick at collecting anything. It's that fine line between fool and genius, pain for pleasure.

He makes an 'x' right? I had a quick look at the hall yesterday, and chat to a few friends about my idea and I really do think you can tell a lot about someone's personality from this simple action.

I am thinking I will start collecting images over the course of this winter. There's a couple of WNT events I will try to play nearby, and it would be cool to try and convince some elite players to have their photo taken. Though I do kind of think it would be more cool if organized regarding the local scene. I'm quite liking the idea of this. Going between American table halls, Chinese table halls, Bar players and Snooker halls. I haven't been motivated to shoot pictures in a long time. The last zine I made was more than a year ago, and the last exhibit during covid times.

Thick skin, thick brain. No sense, no feeling. Or something to that affect 🤣

Little bit of that, and a little bit of something to avoid staring at spreadsheets, emails, reports and the like.

Sun up for me, thanks for sharing, couldn't agree more

As far as chalk I use master.
I use a similar technique. Chalk usually ends up almost flat. When it gets near the paper, I toss it and start again.
I have one friend who digs enormous holes in a piece of Master, blueing the end of a shaft on an incredibly expensive Zen cue. Fantastic player, who 10 years ago was one of the best players in the district of my local hall. We usually meet up one or two nights a month after he finishes work. He rocks up suited and booted, and I always thought this method of chalking totally juxtaposed his persona.

I make my little inverted point chalking in an 'X' fashion, then wear down the point till it's flat, always chalking away from myself, then keep repeating until it eventually cracks in the middle. Used to do this with the Triangle I would use playing snooker, haven't exhausted a piece of chalk in the time I have switched to pool. I used to keep it very tidy, and use a Stanley knife to trim the edge of the paper level. I don't seem to care as much these days playing pool.

Cues with chalk all over ferrule🤢

Just got given a few pieces of chalk by a brand, and among them was a piece of Pagulayan (along with a new chalk that's not out yet that looks interesting, and is supposed to be "Ultra Clean") to test and feedback compared to said brand.
Pagulayan is near enough identical to this piece of DJH (which is a couple years old, and slightly discolored due to being left in a cupboard). DJH looks slightly larger cut, but the label sizes and square dimensions the same. Both made in Finland, both Taom... Rub my finger over both, feel the same. Coated a tip with each, felt the same when applied. Will hit a few shots with each shaft with power, spin etc. over the weekend.
Had an odd hour to myself this afternoon, hence the pedantic, pretty much pointless follow-up here :)

Maybe shoes, gloves and towels. Funny that pool players have been known to obsess over these things too.

Pool is totally mental. It’s the hobby for tinkerers.

Guess you haven't tried golf. Talk about going down a equipment black-hole golf has it all over pool. Both games are populated by equipment/gadget obsessed nut jobs. Like me. ;)

I became a big fan of TAOM V10 and pitched it to everyone I knew that wasn’t already a convert.

Unsurprisingly, everyone said the same thing about the chalk. Just don’t drop it, especially on a
hard surface. It becomes a joke how far the round piece of chalk can roll and wind up in the most
odd locations requiring a search and find team effort. It’s rolled as far as 3 tables away in the pool
hall when dropped. You can’t even follow its roll so you just head in the direction it was moving.

And then I discovered the cube version of TAOM V10, or equivalent, distributed under the name of
a famous pool player, “The Lion”. So of a gun…it feels more natural to hold & much easier to apply.
Pagulayan Chalk is the best geometric shape for TAOM V10 & it’s not a penny more expensive either.
