Chalk the 8 ball, another 8 ball game

One way we play every once in a while is after the break the 8 ball is spotted
on a cube of chalk.

The rule is you shoot off your stars or stripes then you remove the chalk from under the 8 ball and shoot it in.
But if you knock the 8 ball off the chalk while you are running out your objects balls it is a automatic loss.

If so, how close do you put the piece of chalk behind the already spotted ball?

You put the 8 ball on top of a cube of chalk and spot it as close to the spot as possible.
