I really think this is the way to go for pool right now. You have TAR, IPT, and maybe a few more will pop up or TAR and/or the IPT will put on one a week somewhere down the road.

I know only a few players benifit from it now, but the fact that it is on will help pool down the road IMO. People are too busy to follow two days to a week of a tournament now a days. one day or at the most two is all non-poolnuts can/will watch.

You have the best players, big money purses (for pool ) and the players will start building a fan base from people watching. Johnnyt

I agree. Every venue has it's place...but some tournaments turn into true marathons...

Very true JT. Pool is on baby steps right now,(as it has been for many
years) but the right formula is coming. You and I are over the hill, but
I'm sure we wish the best for the new generation. There are some good
guys out there, a lot of them are a cut above some of old our heroes!

Yes I'm over the hill too and almost under it, but it's a great game and I'd like to see at the very least the top 500 players make a living at it. Johnnyt
 
i dunno. if you mean that challenge matches are ideal just as a stepping stone to building the game up then maybe, but challenge matches alone are not the future of pool. pool needs big tournaments.

an enterprise like TAR is different. they are a tiny set up and provide a niche product to complement the game, and they are doing it very well. it is a sad reflection on the game that many people feel they are the spearhead of pool's future though. (not knocking TAR if you understand correctly).

i am disappointed in the IPT with the challenge matches tbh. the IPT should be working on a few tournaments like they had before, not small piddly matches in a shoe box. start small, maybe one tournament a year - surely they could manage that?

For most tournaments, I agree, 2 days is about what a person might follow, except for something like the WPC. If it was a 3 day tournament or greater being shown on TV, they could just show highlights of the preceding days prior to the last 2 days, but show the final matches for sure.

Most of us would be judged a fanatic or hardcore fan of Pool, but the average person is a different matter.

I don't know about the top 500, but I would, at least, like to see the top 100 make a decent living from Pool. (>100k) The 200-500 range would probably be semi-pro that would make a partial living from it. For the ladies, I would say the top 20 make a decent living, with down to the top 100 making a partial living. The women's skill really drops off bad after you go down a few notches.

An interesting contrast, a couple of years ago, 4-5 probably, I saw the top golfers' earnings in the paper for 6 months, from 1-1 through June, and 18 of them had made over a million dollars in 6 months.
