When it comes to competition, the Cue Club is THE place to find it.

The Metro is more of a high end Billiards room with pricey drinks, an excellent menu, expensive table time and hot waitresses. They cater to the downtown business crowd, and although the equipment is in superb shape, I get the impression that pool is the secondary draw there.

Another room to check out when your in Edmonton is the Highrun club. It's open 24 hours and the tables are in excellent shape.

your right,id pay 10 bucks anyday to learn something i didnt know.

Well, I'm sure Benny will play you any game... race to 3... $10 sets ALL DAY.

As to paying $10 anyday to learn something you didn't know... I can save you some $......... here's what you'll learn.... YOU'RE NOT AS GOOD AS HE IS.

As to where to play in Edmonton:
The Cue Club is the only place you can find a game. You could go to the Metro or the Highrun and stay there for weeks and never find a game. However, at the Cue Club you will find the toughest players in the city (and maybe Western Canada).

Unfortunately I don't play league, not this year at least. I simply have to much on my plate to find the time to play, it doesn't help that I live 45 minutes outside of the city either:o When I do play in the city I go to Stix, I like the atmosphere in there plus they have some kick ass food! I don't make it there very often since I bought my table, where do you typically play at?

I have just started this up in my room (Montana Billiards). On Wednesdays its $10 to challenge me - 9 ball race to 5 - 8 Ball race to 3 - if you beat me you win a night of free pool for you and a guest plus $20 bucks worth of drinks - redeemable at the time you play the free pool. The challenge money goes back into the business for cue and table repairs. Things such as this add a lot of fun to tournament night - we also have a break contest open every night of the week - $2 a try - you win the pot if you sink the 9 on the break. The money adds up until someone drops the 9. The house puts in the initial $10 to start the pot. We've had the break contest pot as high as $150.00 recently.

My earlier comments were not made to insult your game, but rather to point out that paying $10 for a single race to 3 with a very high calibre player (Beat the Pro) has no point.

I absolutely agree that it is vital to play someone better than yourself to improve. However, playing them a single race to 3 will not teach you anything. If you lose, (and maybe not even gotten to the table) what have you learned? If you win, what have you learned? As we all know, anyone can sometimes win a short race against anybody. A race to 3 is over so fast that its doubtful that anything can be learned. If you win or lose, do you stop playing after that single set or play some more?

If you are willing to play more, why not just match up with the better player and play several cheap sets of longer races. During this time you will get a good feel of how you are playing and where your game is. You can, by watching the better player (if you're paying attention and asking questions) learn a lot of different shots and ways to handle different situations and thus improve your game.

Repeat this with several different high level players and try to implement the things you learn and your game will improve dramatically. While it may cost you a few $, the lessons learned will be well worth it... a much better investment than the "Beat the Pro".
