Changing a tip with a lathe

I was watching this video on you tube where a cuemaker was changing a tip, I noticed that he gripped the end of the shaft with a plastic tube to protect the shaft from the teeth of the chuck, what prevents the the other end (joint section) from flying all over the place when the shaft starts spinning ?
