Changing Joint & Collars On Shaft

Can the joint and collars on a shaft be changed to match up with a different cue? I have a couple shafts that have 5/16 x 14 that I would like to change out to 3/8 x 11 to use on a different cue. Can this be done and is it relatively easy for a cuemaker to do?

Thanks,

Randy

I.D. Problems

Howzit Randy,
The 5/16" x14 Brass Insert puts a 7/16" threaded hole in the shaft. I think they gotta put in an Insert/Plug and rebore for the 3/8" Pin..
Machine off the existing collars or, if none, machine a tendon , Usually 5/8", and slide on the new rings/ collar assembly..
Easier said than done..:(

Some things in cue making/repair look very easy to accomplish but are actually fairly hard. Other things look tough but are actually, very easy. This would fall into the very easy category but you must keep in mind that the donor shaft would probably be destroyed. To save both shafts would be time consuming.

Dick,

What do you mean by "donor shaft"? I'm confused. Why would the shaft be destroyed?

Thanks,

my guess is he misunderstood your question. i assume he thought you where asking to have a collar from one shaft that matches the current butt removed and placed onto anouther shaft, i which case, the collar that matched would be the "donor" and would be destroyed in the process....this obviously isnt what you where asking.

Correct. If you just want the threads changed then any one with a lathe could probably do it before they drank their morning coffee. The deco-rings are another matter. If the ones you want are fairly common or simple and the repair man makes many after market shafts he might have the proper combination to put together to match the cue as long as the new deco-ring combination is at least as long or longer than the ones that need replaced. If not the shaft will be shorter. If the repair man doesn't happen to have the right combination then it could cost as much as 200.00 just to make the rings and then they must be cut down to match the butt and a finish installed.

Thanks for the input! Much appreciated! My plan would be to have the cuemaker that made the cue I want the shafts matched to do the work.

Thanks,

Randy
