Changing of the guards

Have you observed on major and even minor tournaments
the young ones have virtually taken the old guards, take
the case on WPC, Wu Chia Ching wons that one, US Open,
Alex Pagulayan won that one, World Pool League - Hohmann won that one,
Immonen won the Atlanta Open, Manalo just won the Joss Tour.
Where are the Efren's, Strickland, Archer (debatable on age),
Parica and the like?
Of course this happens on the this 2nd half of the year since Efren also
won many tournaments on the 1st half. Also Parica is runner up to Alex on
the last US Open.

Could this go on? :confused:
We'll time will just tell... :D
The IPT is just around the corner of course.. ;)
 
Nice post. The old guard is still playing well, but the baton has definitely been passed, and the immeidate future, I suspect, belongs to Thorsten Hohmann, Alex Pagulalyan, Chia Ching Wu, Po cheng Kuo, Pei Wei Chang, Andreas Roschkowsky and a few others.

I think this is good for pool.
 
I would also add Vilmos Foldes and Raj Hundal into the mix as well. The future looks bright for pool, unfortunately i'm not too sure on the future of the Americans. Other than Deuel, Owen, and Basavich are there any other American stars still in their 20s?

You know I've noticed the same...this is one thing I never really payed attention to before...the Int'l wave in Pool...I've been playing for 25+ years and grew up knowing all the US greats...it wasn't until I was introduced to League play that I began to follow the current crop of players more closely. I find the same to be true...where were the guys I remembered?...seems like there are more recognizable American Women than Men???

My question: Do you guys/gals think Europe and Asia have a better mechanism than the US for grooming players? There always seems to be Players in the pipe from these countries? What can the US do, and through what Organization, (if you think one exists), do to respond to this invasion???

Good questions. For the Philippines, I believe pool is a huge part of their national pride and identity in the sports world, which is why a lot of youngsters aspire to be an Efren or a Django. Pool is also a way of life and a means of survival for many Filipinos, which is why many of them are so good when it comes to gambling. For Taiwan, I think I heard that the government sponsors programs for the young pool players...which is why you have such a wave of VERY young Taiwanese players. I could be wrong about this...Colin probably would have more accurate information. As for Europe, I'm sure other people in this forum can better represent their side.

As for America, pool has always been just a game of recreation. Not only that, but pool doesn't seem to have a very good reputation among the mainstream. A lack of exposure and the lack of money are obviously the biggest problems for the pool industry in America. Sure, a couple of segments on ESPN2 help a bit (that's how I got all jived with pool), but when they play for pennies compared to other sports such as golf or even bowling, it really doesn't help youngsters aspire to become a professional pool players if you still need a steady job on the side to help supplement your income. Hopefully, the IPT may change things.

I to am hopeful about the IPT bringing new interest, I just hope we don't get a bunch of hack, hustler wannabes...you know the drunk loud mouth from your local wattering hole who's got a little stick and thinks he can beat the world...I hope it grows a crop of players that are really students of the game and make great ambassadors of our beloved game...
 
as bored as i am with 9ball/pool, i can't fathom what i'll do when strickland/archer/reyes/busta go bye-bye

all those players sjm mentioned,,,,when are we ever going to see them(other than alex)?

Actually, VanDenBerg's credentials look stronger than those of Hundal and Foldes right now after Nick's 5th place finish at the WPC and 7th place finsih at the US Open. Same for Roschkowsky, who came 4th at the BCA Open and 9th at the US Open. Sandor Tot of Hungary was the top ranked player on the Eurotour in 2005, and also rates the nod over Raj and Vilmos.

To me, Hundal remains a one hit wonder with a lot left to prove. Foldes does look like he's a rising star, but needs to do more to prove his pedigree. Solid crop of young Europeans. Of course, none of them are in the same class as with Thorsten Hohmann!

I hear this has been a good year for the Philippines, at least sports-wise,
what with Efren's DCC win, the US Open win of Alex, other filipino cue artists coming out of the woodwork, the wins (on the same day) by Manny Pacquiao and 2 other filipino boxers, the win of manny's (older or younger?) brother recently, plus i read that the Philippine bet won in the Ms. International beauty pageant. Pretty impressive. Now if only your politicians can get their acts together.....

Looks like you are up to date on the situation here huh..!!!
Yes all of the above are correct and true. Our sportsmen are doing great
and so our beautiful women here ;) And yes it is also true our politicians
are getting insane by the day to say the least. Rally here and there..
religious people are meddling as always in our politics, accusations here
and there...and just recently one of our congressman Mark Jimenez who
was imprisoned there in the US for illegal contribution of fund during elections
is coming back to the philippines because of extradition..and guess what
he will create another mess here...(so much more the reason to pray
harder and more often for these people..).

And probably you will see a good reason why some Filipino if not most of
the filipino here are sometimes quiet very proud and may impress on other
people here as boasting when in fact we have nothing to celebrate good here
except for this wins by our fellow country man which only get attention
by our politicians when he/she wins (take the case of Onyok the one who won a silver medal in the olympics that was 1996 on boxing which until now does not receive what was promise by our politicians..sigh...) other than that funds and support are as rare as rains in the desert. With all this not so good news in our country the more reason that i turn to good news everyday...which could only be found on book of books...the BIBLE..!!!

Regarding our Philippine Open update here...i didnt see all the matches
i see the match between Gandy Valle and Jerome Peña (one of the rising star here)...Gandy won 9-6...Also Gaga Gabica won against Ducanes 9-8..Ducanes was leading 8-6 and is breaking...but give back the opportunity to Gaga and he clean the last 3 racks to won hill hill..As i was leaving home...Rubilen Amit, the only woman in the tournament who happens to be from my place, Cebu City, was playing against Ronnie Alcano and Rubilen was leading 5-4 with Alcano breaking next...it could have been 5-2..when she was leading at 4-2...shooting the 6 at the top right ...preparing for next 7 ball which happens to be on the bottom right...she scratch it to the bottom left hole...and alcano make it 4-3..then alcano breaks..and make it 4-4...Rubilen employs the soft break...and alcano employs a power break..two great constrasting styles..but equally the same results..at one time rubilen...pocket 3 balls at the break..and getting in shape for the 1...

As for other players..Luat...Orcullo...Elvis Perez...won there respective games...i dont know the score but i overheard our local commentator here..
By the way it was shown on Solar Sports...

You forgot the Filipino young guns namely Manalo and Alcano.
And there's Orcullo, Kiamco...and the up and coming
Jeff De Luna and Gomez.

And for the women we have Rubilen Amit, he already beat big names
here in the like of Kiamco, Valle and the like.

Thanks for the info. Orcullo is a name I should have come up with, but overlooked. Alcano hasn't accomplished anything important on the international stage. For some reason, I thought Manalo was not that young. Kiamco is another one I thought wasn't so young anymore. I stand corrected.

Come to think of it...Nick Van Den Berg and Wu Chia Ching
in the World 8 Ball finals and Wu the 16 year old won it.

I think its fair to say goodbye Efren, goodbye Django, goodbye Earl!!!

Ceb, I'll tell you what, You can have the young guys (all the names listed so far), and I'll take the old guys (Hall,Varner,Reyes,Parica etc.)at ANY 1-pocket even you wish for some V-bucks......:).....Gerry

Sorry, 9ball bores me to tears anymore......and 14.1 just is'nt played enough these days.....so it's gotta be 1-pocket:)

I disagree. I don't think anyone should dare "say goodbye" to Efren, Django, and Earl just yet. Although Efren and Earl are probably past their prime, them at 60% is still better than 95% of the top pros right now. All three can still compete. Sure Efren has had a slump the past couple tournaments, but he's still the holds the all-around title in the DCC the past two years. Django has made the semi finals in the US Open and WPC 8ball. Earl also made the semifinals in the US Open and placed second in the recent Glass City tournament. I don't think any of them should be said good bye to just yet.

However, I do agree with the list of these new players. They're just adding to the list of existing great players, not substituting them.
 
I beg to disagree. Alcano has not accomplished anything in the international scene? He won World 9 Ball and World 8 Ball Championships in the span of three months and he was the runner up in the recently concluded US 9 Ball Open. I think those are accomplishments worthy of mentioning.
