Changing Tip Tools

What are the basic tools and supplies needed to change a tip (for an amateur)?

If I wanted to get what I needed to change a tip and keep the cost (not counting the tips) around $50, what do you suggest for someone that wants to do a good job but lacks the experience of changing them.

Are there any tools you would recomend that beginners can use and still do a good job?

Any tips to stay away from, as I've heard that changing layered tips can be tricky?
 
You can not get there from here...period. You must be joking because you said "under $50" and "good job". LOL!!!
For best results...leave it to the professionals or your next post will be "How to replace my ferrule".
The cheapest route probably will be a Williards machine. But I believe they are still a couple hundred dollars. Check Mueller's...www.poolndarts.com...they stock them. The Williards will do a decent job if you are EXTREMELY careful and have some talent...if not it will look like you stuck your ferrule into a pencil sharpener. Sure some people get by with a file, some tape, razorblade, and sandpaper...but it makes me cringe. For a proper job...then invest in one of the small lathes that does like tips and ferrules only. Hightower offers one and Unique Products also has the Travel Tipper. Both are ultra small and I believe somewhere in the $700 range. Good luck. Oh...and you may want to talk your local poolroom into letting you do a few beat up house cues to practice with first.

You try find contact in Taiwan. They sell tools that looks like and works like a pencil sharperner.
Black color 35mm by 150mm dimension. It help to trim up the side of the tip and make a doom shape tip.
Cost is less than $20.00.:)

No, the post wasn't meant as a joke, but glad you got such a kick out of it. :rolleyes:

Anyway, there is no one within 150 miles of here that I know of that does tips and I've never done it and was just wondering if there were any tools that might make the job easier if the need aose to have to do it myself. I have some cheap cues to practice on and before I tried it I thought I would ask.
 
I've been looking for years for a tool to do the job. I saw one years ago at an International 3 Cushion tourney in Chicago. The Koreans from NYC seemed to be changing tips every game. Don't ask why. But they had a tool that shaped and edged a tip in about 45 seconds.

Now what I've found in my search is that most of the tools are made for
13mm and smaller and I've been told that it's iffy when working on a layered tip. I currently use Moori tips that until now only came 14mm.
I don't know what tips the Koreans were using. You can try Carom Corner in NYC. If you have any luck let me know. I've tried them several times and get no responce. Ask for Michael Kang. He speaks English, know the business, and played in the Chicago tourney.

Before I bought my first lathe I did all my cue repair with a pin chucked up in a drill and a utility knife. It works pretty darn good and all you need is a drive pin for whatever thread you need to work with. ( a self centering joint pin would work very nicely.)

I have a couple of friends that have put tips on for people for many years using a williards tip machine. But they come to me to get one put on their cues.

Jeff, I'm orginally from Southern IL, (Hardin County area). How close to Chris Cue are you? Maybe you two could talk. You can search the web- I found numerous good sites on doing cue tips. There a Book " HOW TO TIP A POOL CUE" The Layman's Guide, by Terry Macioge, you can buy - see Mueller - price $15.75 + shipping.

Thanks, I would without a doubt send my nice shafts to someone if they ever needed a tip, especially the shafts with the ivory ferrules. That being said, I would like to know that in a fix, I could change it if I really really didn't have the time to wait. I also have some cheaper cues that I always get to trade, sell to people in the league and it's not worth sending those somewhere but it would be nice to be able to put a new tip on those to make them a little more attractive to people.

Actually Rosiclare,IL.

Chris Hightower repair video show how to use a box knife to remove, cut and shape tip. You use use old sewing machine motor/ variable speed drill with foot control with pillar and bearing for steady rest. Mounted on a secured surface. I use Super Gel and Traingle Tip. Glues, Box Knife Blades, Sandpaper, Numerous different type of Tips ( Tips been your major cost). I have the families buy these sundries for gift at Christmas, Birthday,and etc. As I replace 12 cues tip for IN-LAW each year when I return home. Numerous Bars in that area, check with VFW, ELK, and Moose Clubs to do replace to their sticks.

I believe Chris Cue in Anna,IL.
 
Sorry!!! Forgot to mention - also need different shaft pins - the costy of items. 5/16 x 18 a standard bolt can be use.
