Changing weight in a Mcdermott

Ive got a spare Mcdermott a friend is interested in buying, but he wants the weight to be 17-17.5 and right now its 20. Ive been trying to pull/twist the butt cap off but have had no luck only spins freely. I went to Mcdermotts website and it says they can change the weight, but Id rather not spend much money. Anyone know the trick to getting Mcd butt caps off?

Mc Dermott makes a special pair of pliers to do that job, but it can be removed with pair of regular pliers and a rag, or a screwdriver, if your very carefull.

Going from a 20 oz to 17-17.5 might not be easy, depends on the bolt thats in it now and the weight of the wood itself.

If I remember right, McDermotts weigh 17.5 oz. with the weight bolt removed completely.

they vary in weight

I have a D-18 that weighs 19.7 with a small aluminum weight bolt that I hollowed out as much as I dared. The bolt weighs a low fraction of an ounce. Final weight depends on what woods your model cue was crafted from.

They come off pretty easy. Just use your thumbs and press sideways and it will pop out. You can if it doesn't seem to want to come out, put a drop of machine oil at the edge of the bumper and let it seep in. Turn it a few times and it will pop out very easy once you do that. Just clean it afterwards. There is nothing but a groove in the butt cap and a lip on the bumper that keeps it in.

Try pushing the bumper to the side with your thumbs to pop the bumper off. It won't be easy. They make special pliers and before that they had an allen wrench with a spade on one end to slide under the edge of the bumper and popped it that way. You can do the same with a flat screwdriver but be VERY careful so you don't delaminate the finish.

> I'm going to make a pair of pliers for taking these out, because I'm not spending another 2 hours trying to get it out like the last one. I wound up drilling a hole thru the side of the bumper with a Dremel stone, and pulling it out with a steel rod. All this, just to have the weight bolt fall out in my hand. I put it back in with epoxy, hopefully it never moves again. The weight bolt was probably 5" long, and only had maybe 1 1/4 worth of threads on it,the rest was unthreaded, and I think it was stainless.
