Charleston, WV Pool Rooms

In town now ...or coming to town?

Whitey's is the only place I play anymore.

3 Diamonds, but only open weekdays from lunch til ?
They have a $50 King of the Hill tournament last Sat. of each month too.

There is Schultzies, crappy tables tho, more of a bar/hang-out for the gang-bangers and wanna-be's.

It's pretty sad right now...maybe I should open a pool room,....LOL! I didn't really think that just now did I?

The spot used to be the Boulevard Bowling Alley...10 Gold Crowns and action 7 days a week! They tore it down a couple years ago  .

Huntington (1 hour to the west) has a couple places, being a college town helps out.

Whitey's was a good action spot. I played a kid there that was a real good poker player, so they said. We played on that real gaffed up Diamond, where every pocket had a different measurement. It is for sure the top 5 toughest tables I've ever played on. The people were nice there and I really enjoyed it. I heard Whitey died???

To answer the OPs question....
No, there are no good places to play in Charleston. Whitey's Sandwich shop is the only place other than a drug infested gang hangout bar in town that that has a bunch of completely unlevel unkept tables and druggie lowlifes hanging at the bar. Don't remember the name of it, but Whiteys is the only place that actually has a few players and is safe. Two 8 footers and One 9 footer is all. Not great tables... but okay tables. The players that will gamble range from can't hold a stick to a few that can own most people. I have seen go easily into the $1000's. A cheap set is $50. There is a poker room in the back that they have both tournaments a few nights a week, and $$ games on other nights. It is no secret in those parts, whiteys is one many places you can follow your favorite sports team$ as well.

If you want some serious action on some nice Diamonds, make the drive up to Huntington and across from the campus is TJs Billiards. Watch your wallet at any of his 2 places. There are some pretty good players there on occassion. Getting action isn't too hard to do. Jay, the owner will be happy to even play you cheap $2 1 hole if he is there. I lost 16 straight games to him playing one hole. He can stick his opponents like no one I have ever played before. He also has a large collection of cues he sells and is a Richard Harris dealer. I got my Blevins from him and he had several Blevins and Richard Harris cues to choose from.

I am not surprised Whitey may have died. I thought he ws gonna die in front of me coughing from smoking so much.

HOLY CRAP!!!

I can't believe there is actually a place in huntington that has diamond tables.

I'll have to check it out the next time i visit family.

Whitey died out deer hunting last Thanksgiving...heart attack.

He would always give road guys some gas money action if nothing else...and he could play a little.

The 9 ft'er is so tight I can't tell the pockets are any different...thats a lie..one of em I haven't made a ball in for 2 years  .

The tables are above average now...the other poster may have been in before they had new rails installed or when the cloth was on it's last leg.

No more poker...the dog track is getting ready to open table games and they don;t like competition, a lot of local games are getting busted.

There's still a couple guys there with some gamble (I'm a lowly $10 1P player or $20 9 Ball sets :sorry: ) and you never know when Larry Price will be in. Travis Stamper also lives nearby. There's a few others too.

I am pretty sure the three 9 footers were Diamonds..... but I am in that Short Term Memory loss age bracket and could be mistaken. I am pretty sure they were Diamonds... if not they were still really decent tables.

About Whitey... I was an out of towner and could tell he was a nice guy with a big heart. Sorry to hear of his passing. I figured the legal table games might put the kabosh on local games. I left WV in Sept 2007 right after the elections. The slots action there is the tightest I have seen outside of an Indian casino. I would bet the poker hurts the slots as well.

How about Beckley, WV ?

That's where I was born and I'm going to a family reunion up there this weekend. Last time I was there I couldnt even find a table. Doubt anything has changed, OH well.
