Fiance is getting into pool and we live in nyc. So my apartment while can handle a 9ft, will mean no more living room. Which is fine by me but apparently not so much for her. She's totally new to the game and she's been doing the soda bottle practice thus far. Going to the pool hall daily is a hassle of a train commute, and I feel a few hundreds in table time to shoot almost a straight line and just build that muscle memory for a newbie is also a bit out there. I saw this 6ft table go on sale on amazon

It's got decent reviews, I feel it's not a bad idea to get this and just let her shoot into a pocket or get some idea of angles? Anyone own this thing or have any ideas? I considered getting a bar table but I feel the noise and the lack of ability to kind of put it away would be an issue.

Thoughts? Thanks

I mean... I guess it's better than nothing, but it looks pretty flimsy. I say go for it.

Isn't that the new professional tournament 9-ball table?

Oops, my bad...no racking template. Must not be the same one.

Seriously, it's better than nothing. And with nothing you run the risk that she loses interest.

Please do not be offended. It's junk. If you both enjoy pool and will most likely play together buy a decent 6' foot table new or look for a good condition used one. You'll enjoy the table regardless of size.....but get a quality one.

It would require doubling or tripling your budget but supposing pool is something you're serious about, I would try to get a hold of a decent 7' or 8' table on Craigslist or even in For Sale section here on the forum. Yes it's also very expensive to have it transported and set up but if you actually have the room and will to install a pool table in your new york apartment, you might as well do it right. I would kill to have my own table yet the square footage just to house a table would bump my rent another $1,000/month probably. So I'm guessing if you can afford an apartment that can fit a pool table you can afford a used bar box or low-end home 8' table.

I mean if this is really a 'practice table' and not just a recreation table for yourself and guests to fool around with, you probably need something that actually gives you good practice. The bigger the table and the tighter the pockets, the more your practice will pay off. A very small table with buckets for pockets will let you hit balls around and get a feel for the physics of the game but it's simply not going to be capable of showing you where your flaws are, and playing that all the time may get you set in your ways and hurt your progress. I'd rather practice on a snooker table once a week rather than let myself get lazy and sloppy just slopping balls around a small table in my own home every day.

I totally get where you guys are coming from. I am actually buying a gold crown 9ft for my warehouse that I can practice on. However, from my warehouse to our apartment is quite a trip. This was more of a for the ease of access factor. Price in reality isn't that important. The other being I don't know how a proper table would be noise wise for my neighbors. The closest pool hall to our place is 10 mins away but the place is a bit sketchy at night and it's not well maintained. She operates part of our business from home most of the day, while I am at the day job. Which is why I felt just something at home would be better than nothing. No doubt the day we move out of Manhattan there will be a brand new table in the house but until then my options are limited.

What is the pool hall that's 10 minutes away? Steinway or Amsterdam?

I wish haha. I use to live about 20 mins away from amsterdam till it just got too noisy for me. We are about 10 minutes from a place called Post billiards cafe. I went there once to check it out recently. The tables were kinda grimy, it was definitely more of a club scene at night and considering they had a metal detector by the front door wasn't too reassuring.

I would not touch that thing with a ten foot pole....
..it's like buying what looks like a car...and got a sewing machine motor under the hood.

There are some multi choice options in tables...where you don't have to move it.

You can buy a table tennis top also....and you got something to sell when you move.
