If anyone is looking at a cheap wood lathe just for sanding/wraps, etc. Here's one from Harbor Freight, this coupon willl work anywhere for anyone, but it's only good until Dec. 8th. It's from their website http://www.harborfreightusa.com/html/wkend1208/usa_cpnsave.html

That machine is very hard to add any parts like chucks and live centers to. Harbor Freight makes one that is just a little more expensive that has #1 morse tapers in tailstock and headstock which is much easier to get chucks and live centers for. It has a single round tube for a bed and is well worth the difference in cost.

I just looked at the description and it says this:

If this one has a #2 MT in the tailstock it will be easier to buy live centers and such for than the former model that looks like this one. If it has the 3/4-10 headstock thread like the older ones with no morse taper inside it will be harder to put a quality chuck on it.
 
I just figured for $90 it wasn't a bad deal to use for finish spraying, sanding, etc. I paid $360 for my Jet with extended bed and that's all I use that for.....wish HF had this sale then. Deals never seem to happen when you really need them:smile:

What's the minimum rpm on that Dave?
I dunno how you can spray and wrap with that.
 
I have one of those Hbr Frt lathes. I drilled and tapped the bowl plate, then mounted a flat backed chuck to it. been using it for 5 years or so now.

works fine for retipping, cleaning shafts. with adapters, I rough cut forearms, too. even though the runout is 0.002, it does a decent job for very few bucks.

For those operations, I have adapted a variable motor to use on it. It takes a little work, but any lathe will be needing some kind of mod. I really like my Jet mini, but it cost me $350 + the bed extension, then all the mods. chucks, etc. so for a $90 start with this lathe, it may be a better deal for a beginner without a big cash outlay.
