Cheated out of $1100

I think I just got screwed out of $1100. A few weeks ago, I met this guy over on the internet and we hammered out a deal where I would purchase 2 cues for $1100. I expressed my concern that I wanted this to be an honest transaction and he assured me that it will be. So I sent him a postal money order for the amount + $50 for overnite shipping and insurance. He sent me an email saying that he shipped the cues out last Thursday, insured using priority mail and it has been a week and I still dont have the cues. He also mentioned that he would be out of town on Monday and Im not sure when he'll be back. So far Ive emailed him once to sayin that I dont have the cues.

Im thinking a couple of things.
1) I just got screwed.
2) The cue is lost or he fouled up on the address. But he can claim insurance. Who knows how long that would take.
3) I shipped stuff priority mail all the time and it doesnt take a week to go from Indiana to Illinois. Maybe I should wait longer.

My gut feeling is that I got screwed. Do you guys know of anyway I could recover the money? Would contacting the police dept where he lives help? All I have is his address, the emails that we exchanges and a phone number that seems to go to his voice mail.

The police could easily find out who he is through what you have. Problem is they might not bother on such a small case. Steal $200 from an automated teller and you will have a nationwide manhunt after you. Fraud a private individual out of $1100 on a internet transaction and they could care less.

We had our house broken into the day we took possesion but had not yet moved in and the theives stole about $20,000 worth of appliances. The police got prints off the vehicles tires in the dust of the garage and did very little searching otherwise for any clues. They never followed up the case and it has happend many times since. On the other hand the guy who robbed a brink truck of $10,000 in the same city was hunted down by a huge taskforce and eventually captured in Europe of all places. A huge double standard. Long story short you have to look after yourself in this world cause the police that your taxes pay for would much rather give you a parking ticket or set up a automated radar trap then help out people with the real problems they should be dealing with. In hindsite I would have been camped out in the basement of the house with my shotgun the day we took possesion. Course the cops would probably rather that not happen as I might just shoot the bastards but this is what their appathy has left we with no protection from they who are sworn to do just that.

Well, if he told you he was shipping overnight like you stated, and was using USPS Priority Mail, that should have been your first clue. USPS states that Priority Mail usually ships in 2-3 days, but does not guarantee it. Did you get a Delivery Confirmation number from the person you bought the cues from? I always require the person I'm buying from to send some kind of tracking number to me. There is still a chance you will get the cues as I have sent items via USPS Priority Mail that have taken over a week to get to their destination. Hope it works out for you in the end.

I dont mean to sound like a jerk but i hear this all the time. I would never send that much money with out getting the cues first!! I guess thats just the chance you take

KC, I sold a cue here for $750. The buyer has never even met me. Established boarders here , I can trust. I'd have no problems sending you, Don P or Juston a thousand dollars for a cue. I know you guys aren't going to disappear for a measly thousand dollars.
But, if you're going to meet people on some other yahoo like chatroom, you cannot trust those guys.
People at CCB conduct cue business all the time without any problems there. Same at EPT. Hell, Bandido sent me two cues before he even received payment. These cues totaled almost 3K.
Maybe Mike here can offer an Escrow service.:)

Joseph Cues, thanks for compliment. I do appriciate it very much. Let's just hope dooziexx receives his cues.

Don, if you ran, you wouldn't get too far. :D
It's amazing how some people can ruin a good thing for a ton of people.
I hope Doozie gets the scumbag.
I know one collector who sent a good chunk of money from a "seller" in England for a Joss West. Unbelieveable.
The scumbag ditched.

Thanks guys. Im just sitting here trying to be patient and hopefully the cues will come eventually. What boggles my mind the most is that Ive sold over a 100 cues in the past year and I always use USPS Priority Mail for shipping and my customers always gets them in 2-3days tops even over this past holiday season. And this guy lives just 1 state away (Im in Illinois and hes in Indiana) and its over a week since he said that he mailed it out. I did a mapquest and found out that he lives only 60 miles away but I did that after I sent the money out. What I should have done was to drive there and conduct the transaction in person. Not only would I have the cues now but I would have saved the extra $50 that I gave him for shipping.....

If my memory serves me correctly, it is a Federal offense to commit acts of fraud using the USPS (United States Postal Service) (i.e. chain-mail). If in fact you were duped out of $1100, you could always contact the good ol' G-men. Nobody wants an FBI investigation on them. Besides, you never know if this guy has an investigation already on him for doing this in the past. It could be your call that helps nab him. Who knows? The worst thing that could happen is you wouldn't get your $1100 or cues. And, that doesn't sound much different than what would happen if you didn't do anything. I hope everything works out.

Joe I understand what you are saying, you just have to make sure you know who you are making deals with, and yes you can trust me.

no offence king cueball, but i never trust a guy who finds it necessary to say,,,,,,,,,,,,,,yes you can trust me

Man, I would be in my car, with buddies, driving the 60 miles. We can all use an extra grand in our kick and being burned for our $ leaves a taste that lasts way too long. I really hope that you are successful in getting either your money or the cues! I have been amazed at the number of cues members of this board buy and sell on regular basis. Question: what is the agreement with the seller if you are not satisfied with the hit or something else?

Give the guy a few days then ask him to do a trace on the package to see where it is. Do the same on your end. It may be the package is damaged or the address part is messed up. If nothing shows, then file a claim with the USPS postal inspector. They play by a different set of rules and get the him if he did screw you. They are slow but get results. He's in for a load of trouble because it's interstate and a lot of money.
Like the other guy said, the local PD aren't of any help. They know if they actually go after criminals then they, the DA, judges, lawyers, etc will be out of work fast because of a lower crime rate. The local PD don't want to jeapordize their job security. They'll just file it away and pull it out when they go yelling for higher taxes and "fees". Maybe if you told them there were donuts in the package they'll do something.

Lol I understand you bill. I knew i would read that when i wrote it! lol lol

Hi Doozie. I feel so bad for ya....sounds like you got a really raw deal. If the guy doesn't respond to you soon and you cannot track the package, I would take him to small claims court.....if you need help tracking him down, I have some great websites that might help ya....

Good luck to ya!

thanks for the compliment joseph....i can say don p sent me a cue that was of high value and i have been trying to get the money together....everytime i mention returning it so he doesnt feel he is getting screwed ,"he says im not worried we made a agree ment......"....takes one helluva guy to do that and i promise you i cherish and protect it as it were a million dollar cue......i have never dodge this man and wouldnt over something like this.....just shows the real charachter of some people.....i hope doozie gets his cues......juston coleman

ajcu is correct - it's a pretty big deal to use USPS (or even USPS money orders) in fraud cases. automatically takes it to a federal offense, regardless of the amount. the USPS is actually pretty diligent about investigating it, too. i'd file a report with them and get their advice about who else to contact.
