China Bans Ivory

Well, in the past decade public opinion has moved against ivory/shark fin consumption and other odious symbols of corruption via wildlife consumption. As you know, in a top-down system the CCP can enact change overnight, even better if political will aligns with public sentiment.

Displace 1.2 million people to build a dam? Done. Here's a check and a bus ticket, Good luck!

Obviously, this ban removes the argument of pointing the finger at China re our own ivory restrictions, IF, as you say, Beijing follows through with it. I see no reason why they won't, since this aligns perfectly with Xi's overarching campaign against corruption and graft (just not his own corruption and graft, but what else is new?)

Happy new year Joe!

Taking a year... possibly allowing those to "stockpile"...
Not like China has never been accused of corruption.....

If it happens.. great.. but take this with a grain of salt.

Just like child labor and environmental issues...

Actually it is not taking a year. Read the entire article instead of speed reading.
Ivory processing factories have to close by March 31st.....<100 days from now.
Laws like this require implementation and "enforcement" which takes some time.
especially in a nation as large as China with its population. In any event, you do
not want to break the law in China as those folks don't treat you the same as in
the USA courts with endless appeals and light sentences for 1st time offenses.

Yeah, I would be extremely careful about never breaking the law if I were in China.

I have a feeling the rules are about to change and you may be VERY glad you're retired. As to the ivory I don't really care as it does not effect me one way or the other but I will say I do not want the elephants to go extinct and I do not want an animals well being made more important than a humans well being.
