Chinese 8 Ball

BTW, stories surface today that eyewitnesses saying that they were at the matches on Jan, 3rd. And they never heard Daz called those two 8 shots, in English or otherwise. The videos will be released soon, we will tell.

Some clarifications: This event is deliberately using Chinese as the referee language which I couldn't understand. In fact, all the refs were trained to understand simple english words such as pockets calling and shotclock announcements, etc. They sure can understand "corner" or "cornet pocket" if Daz speaks in English. So I am really intrigued as what really happened.

English 8-ball is played on a similarly setup 7 ft. table - snooker cushions & pockets, no diamonds to aid aiming. Balls are 2", cue ball 1 7/8".

So, would Americans like playing on such tougher tables?

I don't know if they would like playing in such conditions, but it would be good for them, especially to learn on. You simply cannot have a poor stroke and pot balls.

Some Chinese fellas consider he is an overall better 8 ball player than Melling, however his luck was lower, especially on breaking.

They are duelling tomorrow in the finals, race to 17.

This is definitely a twist of fate for Billiard in China if only the Chinese billiard association wasn't so corrupt.

For a start its great that the event is being covered by CCTV and it seems like a pretty well organized event. I for one love those JOY tables and their choice of Strachan cloths, tables are very well built with great cloth. I've played on quite some Chinese pool table and JOY is definitely my favorite.

The only problem with this event is that quite a few top players in China have been warned not to participate in this event as STAR Brand (another table manufacturer) is supposedly sponsoring them or funding the Chinese billiard association in a way which I think is absolute bull crap. A few whom I will not name event had to resort to losing deliberately after getting the warning.
STAR brand has been around longer and has sponsored quite a lot of major events so they are pretty influential.

I know that a few of those that aren't allowed to played are extremely good players and have seen a few of them play big money sets.

In any case this is still a start for pool and I certainly look forward to regular pool getting the same coverage!

To the OP of this thread, where abouts are you from? Which Chinese forum are you referring to? 中试黑八网?

Star is very heavy-handed when it comes to things like this. Fury sponsored Pan Xiao Ting and was set for her to do a tour of China and Star said she can't play on anything but Star tables in Star-owned locations. Fury even offered to take two Star tables to each event and set them up and make sure Pan never played on anything but Star tables and they said no.

Joy is a big competitor to Star in China so it's not surprising that this is an issue. Star is silly though. What they want is for their players to win and have that BIG Star logo on tv. It is however quite possible that Joy forbade the players from wearing logos of any other table brand in which case I can see Star's reaction.

Yeah I've heard similar things and I say I'd boycott Star pool halls because of that...whatever they're doing definitely isn't good for the industry or pool as a whole.

Joy pool halls in China are pretty well received, the ones i visit in Wuhan have typically 20-40 tables and they're mostly full come evenings and not the mention the newer ones have great renos. Also the regular pool tables that they recommend in their halls are Aileex tables which i think is definitely one of the better pool table.

Gareth Potts can PLAY!

Also this event could be titled, "Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Using the Tangent Line." Because if you watch the play you will see that they run into balls a lot or go through tight spaces using the stun shot and the tangent line considerably.

Anyone got a stream for the finals? I thought it was at 11:30 but on CCTV5 it's boxing. Nothing on YouKu.

I am not the OP, but the forum I mentioned in my post is www.zs8q.com, 中式八球网

The conspiracy theory regarding the absence of a few top Chinese pros in this event is quite popular in there too.

the finals has been scheduled to start 10 minutes ago, however the live stream won't go on till 1:30 localtime, my guess is that there are some kind of pre-show ceremonies going on before the match.

9:2 another break and run. Gareth uses the tangent line like other players use chalk. Amazing.

And in homage to Dr. Dave obviously CCTV's graphics dept has taken his "gems" on screen pop-up to show the intended pocket for the 8 ball with a little rotating diamond when the player is on the 8.

Melling is frozen in the chair. Finally got up to shoot a safety at 9:2 and Gareth kicks a hanger in to keep shooting. Race to 17 so a lot of pool left but against this break Melling is truly in trouble here. I think it's winner breaks so if Melling gets a game then he could possibly have a good run at it.

Potts runs out from Melling's safety. And to those who think you can't rattle and still make it - just happened Potts rattled a long 13 and it still dropped. These guys are making amazing tough shots on these tight pockets.

Potts breaks and misses the second ball to the right and makes the one on the left instead. Open table again.

11-2 finally a dry break - melling with an open table - runs out in 22 seconds
;-) 11-3

No one threads the needle off the rail better than Melling. This guy is a bonafide MONSTER player. Down 11-2 he runs three racks to make it 11-5. No give up at all.
