I'm getting a Jet mini lathe w/bed extension for turning down stock, putting on wraps, etc., and I wondered if if could get some suggestions for a chuck. 3-jaw? 4-jaw? Any specific makes?
Thanks,
J.D.

A std. 3 jaw chuck will suffice for what you're doing.

For that matter, you could even use a large capacity drill chuck.

Is it a metal lathe or a wood lathe? I have been under the assumption that the Jet Mini-lathe was a small wood lathe that pen makers seem to think highly of.

It's a small wood lathe (40" between centers w/bed extension). I'm still looking for a metal lathe, but figured the little wood lathe would be good for wraps, finishing, etc.

I own the Jet Mini 10"x14" with the bed extension, which gives around 36-40" depending on the center I use in the tailstock. I have a small scroll chuck I think around 1.5 inch cap. I like this lathe for doing the wraps, polishing/buffing, and sanding. Unfortunatly they don't go slow enough for normal finishing purposes. I am looking for a continuous duty - variable speed motor to put on it. I use a sewing machine motor with foot pedal for the wraps, but it heats up to much to leave it on for a finish job. One thing I really like, is it's quiet when running

The Jet has a 1 x 8 thread spindle, so there are lots of chucks
made to fit. You can find one on fleabay most any day for $50 - 60.

PM me if you want some companies that sell them direct.

I would opt for a 3 jaw, with a key, not Tommy bars, more convient.
A 4 jaw would be handy for turning down squares, but not worth
the hassle for other ops - IMHO.
