Clapping for Scratching on the 8ball

...don't hate on ALL of us league players. I don't see this kind of thing from ANY of the teams in our league. We respect each other too much and are all pretty much friends. People exhibit poor sportsmanship at all levels of every sport. We're humans after all. It isn't just league pool players.

Never? Wow, can I play in your league?

I have seen this at virtually all league levels - whether recreational or hard-core - where either your opponent or his teammates are yelling "get in!" whenever a cueball even heads remotely toward a pocket.
These people don't know the first thing about sportsmanship, etiquette, and class.
They are the kind of players who miss, then take the chalk and walk away with it as you are reaching for it to start your inning.
They are the kind of players who think its unfair if you make sure they don't give you the jelly rack.

To use an analogy, can you imagine Tiger Woods yelling "go in the water!" as soon as the ball leaves Phil Mickelson's club? If someone did that to me, or most anybody I know who plays competitive golf, they would have to have a golf club surgically removed from their skull.

I was playing with a team one year and one of my team mates won a game by the other guy scratching, my team mate screamed yeah baby and pumped his fist. I was so discusted by it that when I got up to play my game, I made a ball on the break and then turned and shot the eightball in. There is a time to cheer and a time not to, but never cheer on an eightball scratch, no class at all.

I see poker players cheer the dirtiest of suckouts in big tourneys. Its not a personal thing against the guy they suckout on, its just that their happy they won the hand.

I dont think doing the airplane around the table would be cool evertime you win a match from someone scratching.

But in big matches, I dont see anything wrong with people cheering, fistpumpin, or heck, even the odd airplane ;)

I was at the BCA Texas State Tourney last weekend and I saw a guy scratch on the 8 ball. The opposing teammates then started clapping!

I realize it was a big match (for the hotseat) but I couldn't believe the guys would clap for that.

In the women's team event we kind of duck our heads and don't high-five with a win like that, and yet these guys were clapping and hollering. I guess I just don't get it.

Obviously very poor sportsmanship. But, its kind of interesting when you compare it to other sports. When Lebron James misses a buzzer beater 3 to win a game, the other team clearly celebrates with fashion. But, in golf, when Tiger misses a putt to win/tie, you clearly don't see his opponent cheering. Does it have anything to do with basketball being a team sport? I can see why some beginners in pool will celebrate over a victory like that, because in some sports it is acceptable. I think if the other team high fives right when you scratch on the eight, that is pretty dispicable. But, I think after the match is over and all said is done, then a celebration is more acceptable. Of course, its best not to celebrate right at your opponents face. But, a win is a win, and I don't see a reason why they should not celebrate at all.

what if...

You simply proclaim outloud..."Oh no...don't do that to him." Just as the cue ball scratches or the 8-ball is pocketed "prematurely"?

You ain't the only one, it's just poor sportsmanship.....a win is a win, but a win with a great runout or shot gets applaus....a win from a scratch is a gift that should be enjoyed quietly....
