I was watching a CSI One Pocket match between Justin Hall vs. Corey Deuel. Not sure which year I think it was 2013.

Corey was hooked by just a mm from making a ball. He looked at the shot... Looked again... Then calls the referee over to clean the cue ball in hopes that when placing the ball back he would have a clear shot..

Some of you may think this cheating or unfair. I on the other hand think it is an awesome and intelligent decision to take advantage of the the format.

If nothing happens it at least had Justin a little pissed. lol

It you use one of those devices to replace the ball it should go exactly back where it was. I certainly would not want a ref just picking up the ball and taking a guess where to put it back.

Yeah, I'd noticed that one too, here's a little thread about it...

I don't have a problem with it because It won't affect anything,
as long as the ref has the tools for the job (a ball marker and steady hands).

If he doesn't then they probably should just disallow cleaning mid-rack.

For it to truly be cheating (or attempted cheating) you'd have to be able to read corey's mind.
Only corey knows what his intent was.
There's a there's a perfectly legit reason to get that ball cleaned besides
"I hope the ref screws up and I can see the ball!"

To make the ball corey had to do a small curve/masse.
That's a slow-moving, heavily spinning cue ball. That's the kind of cue ball
that will cause a ton of throw, and the throw is even worse
(kind of "skid-like") if the cue ball is covered with crud.

Cleaning the ball for that kind of shot is just a good precaution,
so it doesn't react in a funny way when you try that touchy little curve shot.

I think it's a wise move as well as a precaution.

A clean ball reacts differently to all kinds of shots opposed to a dirty, or smudged ball.

Depending on the shot, he may have been ensuring he gets the kind of action he wants.

good move

Its a great move!

A) like creedence says, the ref could have placed it in a better view and as mentioned he could have put it in a worse spot.

either way I do believe it was to wipe off any chalk or dust on the cue ball. Mid Game there should be stipulations before hand but if it needs to be done then it needs to be done.

I watched Dennis Orcollo do this a ton playing Shane on a TAR match. People should clean the balls to prevent unwanted skids or throw.

Good move Cory! And so glad you are on the Mosconi Cup Team

It's an even better move when your opponent just ran a 3 pack and is in dead whack! Pick up the cue ball and wipe it off with a towel, making sure to get every speck of dust and debris off of it. Then walk away from the table, but don't turn your back on the other guy.

Best,
Mike

This is not a "good move". It is using the rules to attempt to cheat. If I was a ref and a player asked for the cue ball to be cleaned on a close shot, I would clean it after that shot.

That's just your interpretation of it. How do you know it's an attempt to cheat.
Did corey tell you "I was hoping he'd move it half an inch so I could see the ball"?

Isn't it possible he just wanted the ball to be clean before he attempted
some kind of curving trick shot?

I'd say no shoot it as it is. I'll clean it before the next rack.
Just because in my opinion you could never get it back to the exact spot.

Agree'd, once a rack is broken and in play the balls should not be moved by player nor ref, excluding ball in hand of course. Because of how rare it is that some one wants the ball cleaned mid game, and that occurance happened to be when he was just a hair away from having access to his target ball, I don't doubt for a minute he was hoping for a favorable spot.
