Cleaning the Thread Of a Shaft

I have a joint protector that should go in the shaft but will get a little over halfway down and get real tight. Thinking it must be dirty or something. Is there a way to clean it out? Also, I have 4 shafts with the cue and the protector goes on perfectly on the other 3. Thanks in advance.

I have some joint protectors that fit some, and not others. One is shorter female side, then the other. I just use a different set that fits it.
