I prefer either green cloth or the dark blue.

I have played on both yellow (gold), light blue and red and I don't care much about it, but I really hate grey cloth...

I am glad to hear I am not alone in my opinion about red cloth. I was one of the players complaining to Snorks and now he sees that I am not just full of BS....all the time:p

So now Snorks, still think I am being silly?

OK pool players, bangers please don't read... We have a new pool hall opening up in town that is going to be awesome. Hopefully it will bring back 9 ball into are area.

The issue however is that they are going to be putting red/burgundy color cloth on the tables? So my question to you all, do you care about the color of the cloth? I was at our main pool bar last night and a few people just flat out said that they will not play on red cloth. The reason of red chalk came up, that the cloth can cause headaches, etc...

So, do you guys care if it is red? Would it make you not play?

you have to decide what your demographic will be and if that's how you will make your money. ottowa is a sizable city. if you want to be successful, my guess is you cater to the non-player crowd, but leave some tables for the player. if one were to open a room in manhattan, you die if you run a "player's" room. you're trying to run a successful BUSINESS. pool rooms die because they're run by people who want to own "poolrooms".

if you want color, then why not use different colored cloths rather than just one.

Well I'm also from the Ottawa area and I have to be honest that I am not looking forward to this red cloth either. I played on red cloth once and I did have a headache afterwards. I also hate using the red chalk and don't like being told what colour of chalk to use on my own cue.
I will try the first tournament at this new place and if this cloth bothers me too much, I probably will not return to the others.
Ball bangers are not going to care if the cloth is red, blue, green, black... but most serious pool players and those of us playing in the league and tournaments will care. I find in unfortunate that they didn't take that into consideration, but rather focused more on the "decor".

I could care less if the cloth is red, but I'm using blue chalk, if they ask me not to then I probablly won't play there again. (unless I have too because of league)

Fortunatly the only table with red cloth I can think of in Edmonton is the Metros Challenge table. I don't play on it.

Red cloth does make it harder to see the balls. Green and Electric Blue are the two best colors for pool. And as others have mentioned, the red chalk that they will most likely use will stain a shaft in a heartbeat.

The only place I have played that has red/burgundy tables is Grizzly's on Princess in Kingston.

I think such a dark colour demands more powerful lights to compensate for the dull colour.

Red?

First, you ought get some feedback to the new owners . . . hell, shoot 'em a link to this thread.

Second, Green is THE primary table that has evolved for most tables as it is medically proven to be the most soothing to the eye . . . blue is a close second . . . the eye does not have to focus as hard to gain clarity when it involves these as primary colors . . . hence, in games where focus and concentration is important and color is involved (and not just pool) you'll see a lot of greens and blues . . . god painted some pretty beautiful colors on baseball fields, football fields, golf "greens", and we just carried it on to ping pong, darts, poker tables . . . etc.

One of my friends had a burgundy cloth on his home table . . . that is an awful color to focus on . . . anything but that.

Not too long ago, the Tulsa area had a pool hall with red cloth on black tables. The way the place was fixed up, it had a rather elegant air to it. I was very hesitant to play on the red cloth, at first. Thought it would cause all sorts of problems. But, the tables were very well cared for and very nice to play on. The owner took very good care of all the equipment. I'm not sure why he chose red cloth on black tables, but it was really sharp looking and it turned out better than I would have expected. It was a non-drinking, non-smoking, non-gambling, Christian establishment and as nice as it was, it was not well-advertised and not enough people knew it existed in time to save it from a slow demise.

The down side of this beautiful place was that they didn't allow anything but red chalk. The problem with the red chalk is that it gets on everything and you can't always wash it out. We talked with the owner about using a brown chalk. He said if it didn't show up too much, we could do so. We played with our brown chalk and it went well, so we were allowed to continue. The brown chalk is easier on the clothes, the ferrules, and hardly shows up on the red cloth. Do yourself a favor and talk to the owner about possibly allowing people to use brown chalk, if they wish.

Be sure to bring (or request) a dry rag to wipe down the table rails before you play, to keep as much of the red chalk off your clothes, when you bend down to make a shot. (Even if you're playing with brown chalk, someone before you might have played with red.)

We have a home table with burgundy cloth. Other than messing up good pictures, the burgundy color has given us no grief.

My sister used to have a really nice black Diamond 8' table with red cloth, even though I could play on it anytime day or night for free I wouldn't due to the fact I couldn't stand the cloth. It looked really good in her game room, black table with black walls with a dark cherry wains-coating and chair rail with exotic fighting knives (mostly chrome) displayed in dark cherry display cases.Got pictures of it somewhere???
The only place Ive seen which is worse than red cloth is Pinkies in ColoradoSprings...dozens of tables covered in hot pink cloth.

I have Burgandy at home as thats what my wife demanded since the table resides in the living room. I do not think it is bad on the eyes. I do however perfer green

Welcome to the forum! Great place to hang your hat and chat, once in a while. Also, good to see another cuemaker on here.

I hate to use the word hate, cause it ain't nice. But, I sure do hate red and burgundy cloth. :D

At this hall, you will have to use red chalk.. you will not be allowed to bring Green. I have invested in a few magic erasers already :) Prices are rumored to be $10-12/hour.

On a positive side, there will be a fantastic Thursday night competitive 9 ball league that everyone in the city is looking forward to. Unfortunately, a few of the top notch guys will pass due to the cloth.

Then I am afraid I will have to pass on this place.

I have a friend who has red cloth on his table, and it has never bothered me. I would not personally choose it. I think that pool was meant to be played on green cloth though, and I see no reason for a pool hall that wants to be taken seriously to have anything other than green cloth!

I wonder if it would help if we put some of those colored glasses on you... Maybe we could make it look green... or blue... How about a cool, berry purple??? :D

Seriously, guys. Once you've played on it in a very nice atmosphere, it's okay. I think if it was in a more chaotic atmosphere, it would not be so easy to handle. But, we were amazed at how well our game actually improved on it. We just had to get the owner to let us use the brown chalk, so we could get our minds off the red chalk that was getting all over our clothes. Once we eliminated that bother, our game was much better. One thing I really liked was the fact that I had no problem figuring out which ball was which, for once.

Some will not even try. For those, I feel sorry. We did try, because we liked the atmosphere and the owner. We were really glad we did!

I don't like red cloth... I prefer legacy green...

However, color won't slow me down since I focus on pocketing balls and ignore trivial things that have zero bearing on my ball pocketing abilities...

Pinky's shut down. The way I see it, pool tables are green or blue. If you want pool players, you design your room around green or blue. You don't choose your tables based on your interior. If you want to cater to the bangers. Make it look good and maybe a little unusual. It seems clear which direction the owners of this place are moving.
