Cloth cut at edges of pockets

My cloth of my three month old home table (Legacy brand) has small 1/2 inch cuts on the edge of three of the corner pockets where the cloth folds down into the curved edge of pocket. I think its from the ball rebounding off the back of the pocket into the edge of the slate. So far, other than looking tacky, play isn't effected. Is this a problem with the way the cloth was installed (Championship cloth) or is it the pockets themselves or maybe the slate is to sharp at the edge? Can something be done to avoid this when time comes to replace the cloth?

Other than this, the table plays great.

Thanks,
Steve

yeah, your slate can be sanded or filed so the edge isn't so sharp. Other things that causes this problems are with the pockets being too close the slate, nothing you can do for this.

not a quality install...

When I help my mechanic set up tables.. he always makes sure the pocket shelf is rounded. On most high-end tables (recover of another brand), it is from the factory. If it's not, he has a stone that he rounds the edge of the slate with.
Then, he cuts a 3/4" wide strip of cloth and glues it to the face of the pocket-shelf, so it is barely below the table surface. Then he installs the cloth normally. This extra padding seems to help the re-bound wear.

Not much you can do about it now, but I'd look into it when you have it recovered again... (sooner than you'd wish I bet)

PS: I love the way Championship Tour Edition plays when properly installed.

That should have been done when the table was first set up by who ever did the job:rolleyes:

cut cloth

The reason for the cut cloth is that adhesive is on the slate radius. For that reason we do not apply adhesive to the top of the slate.

ummm...no, it's caused from shallow pockets and a sharp edge on the slate pocket radius, though I do agree with you that no glue belongs on the surface of the slate, but never-the-less...glue or no glue, the cloth is still going to stencil cut through no matter what if you don't file off the sharp edge of the pocket lip:D

PS. It'll cut the cloth off underneath the slate if that edge is sharp too, and has no wood backing;)

If the edges of the slate needs to be sanded down, what should be used?

I use 60 grit on a sanding block to remove the sharp lip in the pocket area, it doesnt take more than 5-10 minutes to do them all.

If you sand to much you take away the possibility of balls hanging in the pockets. Use a backer board or file wraped in sandpaper to try and keep it uniform, all your trying to do is remove the edge or lip not recut the edge of the slate to a bigger radius to make the table play more forgiven.
