Cloth ???

I've always went with Simonis and like it. Thing is I'm going to do some experimenting with my pocket size and was thinking of using something cheaper in case I don't like it. How is the speed of Mercury Ultra in comparison?

Or maybe I could leave a little slack behind the staples in case I want to pull the staples and put smaller cushion facings back on...what would you suggest to avoid wasting money?

This is just my opinion, so take for whatever you think it's worth. I have found that the Mercury Ultra Unbacked plays very fast. I have installed a lot of it and I like it. It's not simonis... it's not worsted and doesn't have all the characteristics of worsted cloth. But over all I have had very good results.

Also your idea of leaving a little extra cloth is also workable. Either way will work. The call is yours. I would be interested in hearing your results. :)

Thanks for the feedback. I'll probably try to salvage the cloth that's on it if possible, even if it looks like hell. It's fairly worn Simonis anyhow. I just need to get some racks in to see if I like the pockets. If that doesn't work maybe I'll try the Mercury Ultra.

You won't like going from simonis to mercury ultra, night and day. Stay with the simonis or if need to go cheaper go with velocity pro as its a worsted cloth as well. JMHO.

We call it the poor mans simonis.

My best friend just put Velocity Pro on his table and I believe he paid around $130 for his (8'er). Not sure who he got it from but it was online. Plays very well but I don't know if it will last as long as Simonis.

Hey, I like the sound of that;) How much does it run?

3045 Ultra is $88 - $109 depending on table size.
Velocity runs $109 - $139 so slightly higher but a better (worsted) cloth then Ultra that plays about the same as 860.

You might want to look at Basalt. Wears longer than 860, plays just as good or better(fast), and nicks less, oh yeah less money. 9 ft table is only about $165. Cloth is like paint, same work to put it on but cheap stuff doesn't last. More and more rooms and players are switching to Basalt. You should go play on some and see how nice it is.

After rereading your post -
all you really need for "experimenting" with the pocket size is enough cloth to do the rails.
1 yard of cloth gets that done and is the least expensive solution (less than $50).

Once you get to where you want the pocket openings then you can make the spend for new bed & rail cloth to do the whole table.

That would probably work. Chances are I'll like it anyway. I guess I could also recover the slate with new Simonis. Put the new facings on and use the old bed cloth to do the rails. Then if I like it I will still have the new Simonis to recover the rails with.

If you plan to recover the table anyway then that's an even better solution.
