CNC lathe

You may send me that old whippy lead screw (and nut of course), no sense having it clutter up your shop :) I'm assuming it is a nice precision ball screw assembly ... I prefer very expensive free stuff ;)

Dave, a cheap bastage who put back a piece of gp acme rod the other day after it rang in at $50

Nope, no ballscrew. It is just some acme that I had left over from a couple of saw machines. I knew in the back of my head that it wouldn't work well but I had to try...........

Murray,

I am a little confused also. A 1/2 x 2 lead screw has a .500" pitch, or 2 turns to move 1". a 1/2 x 2 5 start screw would have a 2.5" pitch and would only require .4 revolution (144 degrees) to go 1". I have never seen a screw that coarse.

Do you mean a 1/2 10 5 start screw? That would actually have a .500" pitch and would be an excellent choice for your machine. I have one for my next machine to build.

I sure wish my machines were as nice looking as yours. I need more equipment to be able to build them like you do. And someone who knows how to use it I guess.

Nook calls it a 1/2-2. It has a .1 pitch and a .5 lead. Two turns of the screw to move 1 inch. http://www.nookindustries.com/acme/AcmeInchInfo.cfm?id=19

It was a great change. The machine runs perfect now. Time to put a enclosure around it and put it to work.

You are welcome to make a trip to Florida. I've had a few cuemaker darken my doorstep needing machine work. I'd love to show you my machine and fab shop. I might even let you play with some of the toys.

Murray,

That is exactly the same screw that I have for my next machine. I have always seen it referred to as a 1/2 x 10 5 start, but I think I would have to defer to Nook's expertise in this situation.

How do you like it? There should really be no whip what so ever because it is turning so slow for fairly rapid movements. What kind of rapids are you running at? I know you are using Gecko's, what size motors are you using? No real need to know, just curious.

I might take you up on that shop visit some day! I sure you have some great toys!

The lathe is great. The new lead screw made all the difference in the world. I have the rapid pretty slow right now so that I don't do anything expensive until I learn the machine a little better. The high freq. spindle is the stone cold nuts. Very quiet and no runout at all. Expensive but damn well worth it. I can tell that I will miss my saw machine though. I will be converting it to CNC very soon. I have a kick a:D :D design in my head.

I'm using the 425 oz motors from Xylotex. I have the board also but was affraid to use it. Since you have used one succesfully I might use it on the saw conversion.

MT, how's the beast been?
What cutter are you using for the the v-points?
thnx

For butts it is the absolute nuts. I'll give it a A+

For shafts it just gets a B. I really miss my saw blade machine for shafts. I will be building a new one as time permits.

Since I have switched to only doing full splice construction I have had to change my way of cutting points so I have not done any in this machine. I'm doing them in my Bridgeport with a custom cutter and jigs.

The machine looks amazing and at the same time confusing to the untrained person. Looks like your list will be opening soon I suppose :D
