CNC question ...?

I have a question for those of you that have pieced together and set up your CNC machine.
Do you use Micro stepping and if so what setting works best?

My Cuemonster uses 10 microsteps and my 3020 Chinese CNC uses 8............. I say to set it to the highest...........

Hi Will,
I run Gecko G540's as my motor drivers. Microstepping is set to 10.
I have seen some drivers out there that claim to be able to go higher. There is a point at which your motors can no longer resolve the microsteps and you're burning up CPU cycles with no increase in detail.

Thank you Kim and Gary for your response.
I set it to 16 (the highest) and tuned the motors to run smooth and quiet sounding.
I suspect I would get the same nice inlays at a lower setting but I am afraid to change it.
If it is working I should leave it alone ... ...

If I did change it to 8 would the motors need to be re-tuned?

Piecing together a control system is not as easy as it first appeared.

I agree about putting a control box together.

But I also agree the Gecko G540 is the way to go.

The only reason not to use maximum steps is if your processor cannot provide pulses quickly enough, for example trying to drive a servo for a spindle motor with step and direction pulses. You need something like a smoothstepper to do this.

I have some information about controllers on my website:

is that a TB6560 board???
how do you like it ?

tks

Kim, Yes ... very inexpensive and easy to set up.
I set it for 16 steps and it is working out great but I might change that to 8 just to see if there is any difference.
Quiet and smooth.
Max speed is set to 25 and cutting speed is usually programed to around F7.
Fast travel is F20 and is plenty fast.
