cognoscenti cue + ob1 or 314-2 shaft?

Hi everyone,
I'm thinking to add a new shaft to my cue to decrease the deflection.
Someone has some experience about this combination?
What do you think to add a laminated shaft to the joe gold butt?

thanx

WHAT!!
If you have a cue like that, get another shaft made by Joe. If you want a OB1, or PRED, then sell your COG, and use the $$ to go buy a Lucassi, Joss, or some other cue and stick one of those shafts on there. The feeling in the hit has lots if not all to do with the shaft. IMHO dont do it man!!

Thank you for your reply PROG8R.
First, I'm happy with my cue and for now I don't want change it; I'm agreement with you about the fantastic hit of the cue.
It's true also the cue has little squirt.
Now I have to decide if I have to assimilate the cue squirt in my aiming or if "correct" the cue.

Prob has nothing to do w/ your aiming. Try moving your bridge back about 3" and re-assess your deflection. Regardless of the hype, any cue in the galaxy will deflect if you're too close to the CB. There's a reason why all of the Filipinos bridge way-far back...

I think all of the instructors on here will contradict that because most mortals can't get the hang of a long bridge.... but if you can, you'll like what you discover.

do you for sure that the cog deflection is affecting your game, or is somebody just telling you should get an ob shaft or have you simply made up your mind that you MUST get another shaft? because unless FOR SURE it's the first answer, then you shouldn't get another shaft.

i'm guessing if you have to ask, then you're not sure, so you should stay with what you have.

No. I'm not sure.
I'm only asking because a very high skill player told me that my cog it's a very good product but has a little squirt.
I know that sometime I miss some shots due the english.
I'll try to "understand" better my cue.

I would then work on my stroke just a bit. Use a striped ball for a bit instead of a cue (or a measles’ ((YUCK))), so you can visually tell if you are putting unnecessary side spin on the cue. Practice pocketing balls using only the vertical axis on the cue ball. Before I dropped 170+$ on a shaft that would make my $1500+ cue hit like a 100$ cue I would invest in a lesson with a BCA instructor or a very solid teacher none-the-less.

Also I believe that all Cog's are 57" (Instead of the standard 58" of most cues) That means the shafts will be 28.5", if you buy an off-the-shelf shaft it'll be 29" by default. This makes the cue just slightly unbalanced, which may or may not be a noticable problem for you.

The best solution therefore is to buy a blank of the shaft you like (I personally like OB-1 way more than Predators) and see if Joey Gold will adapt it for your butt.

Hi Mino

I shot with a cog for quite a while now. From experience most of cogs I have tried all carry a lot of deflection for pool cues. As I have tested with Tony Robles, my cue has "one ball deflection when shooting from the foot spot to the end rail using maximum english. In another word, if I want to hit the center of foot rail with maximum english and conventional follow through stroke, I have to aim 1 ball away from the spot... ( btw, I heard Joe is not in Chicago anymore...)

CueTable Help

Before this cog I used to shoot with a southwest (330-96). Out of curiosity I ordered a a predator 314 blank and had sw custom fitted the ring works. Indeed the deflection has been reduced a bit but the hit is noticeably different. From what I remember it had a much softer hit (this could be from the tip and the taper) and didn't have as much feedback from the ball. I believe the 314 shaft being a little lighter. Although it feels different from the sw hit, I will say it plays quite nice too. Afterwards I learned more about the original shaft.

I'd say go ahead and try it if you have the money. A shaft does not cost much for a learning experiment and you might end up liking it. Just don't tell people about it.

Hi Cuetable,
you confirm what I think: the cue has a little squirt that I have to assimilate in my game, so I think I'll don't buy another laminated shaft.
Thank you for share your experience.

You are welcome. Please note that Predator does make very good products. I have also hit with tiger and ob-1 as well, they are also quite nice which I would buy if I play more often. They all produce different feels than others, and this is something you have to try for yourself. The bottom line is that all shafts will have deflection which requires the player to dial in, even the ones with low deflection. SpiderWebComm (hi dave) also made a good suggestion about getting back to the basics and re-assess the pivot point. The original cog taper shapes more like a cone and I found the pivot point is closer to the front than other cues.

Cogs are great hitting cues but they will take time to dial in. My billiard cue hits a lot stiffer than my cog, and it has even more deflection. This "predicable deflection" is desired by some billiard players. Very often they use maximum English in some shots to achieve a higher scoring chance. Anyway, not to get carried away here....

In your case you are out of luck: I heard Joe is on vocation. You can't get a shaft made soon anyway.
