Coker Cues...What do ya think???

here are some of my cokers, past and future. the thuya burl and curly maple with the malachite rings is a two cue set that is almost done, a playing cue and a break/jump cue. when they are done, i will post pics. they will be two of the nicest cues out of their shop. the other cues are part of my coker "xs" line of cues. their use of the 3/8-10 pin creats a great and consistent hitting cue. enjoy!!

Those are great looking Cokers..Really nice. Good collection...His work is superb, isn't it??? Hold on to those...Those are worth keeping.....

Hotdogg:..The Olivier with maple and purple heart hit a ton....I have been told that Coker and Olivier hit similiar...But Coker does much nicier work on his points and rings and color combos....I sold the Olivier to a friend but was sorry after..He wanted it so bad he made me an offer I couldn't refuse....But everytime I see him and see the cue I wish I had it back...It was really pretty...Hit a ton....Oh well...I am just going to fall in love with my new Coker....
You will love that combo you picked and the curly Purple heart sounds nice....Good luck with it.....

Thank you Hotdogg.

Well, you make some good points. The cue that I have now has a forward balance to it and I really like it. I tried a friend of mine's cue that was wood to wood and also a 3/8 X 10 joint. That felt exceptionably good. So if Coker cues have a forward balance than it should be perfect. How heavy do you like your cue Hotdogg? Do you like triangle tips?

I prefer a cue that is in the range of 18.5 to 19.5 oz. My current playing cue, Kenny Murrell cue, weighs just a hair under 19 oz. What I think is much more critical than the weight of a cue is the balance of it. A well balanced cue that weighs 21 oz or more can feel almost weightless if it is nicely balanced. The actual optimal balance point on a cue varies from person to person b/c every individual holds there cue on a different location of the butt.

As far as solid tips go, I believe triangle tips are the cheapest and one of the best, but I hear that their hardness varies from batch to batch. A good way to remedy this problem is to press the tip in a vice prior to installation. They are medium-hard to hard tips, hold chalk well, but like most of the other solid tips are more prone than layered tips to mushroom. They also do not last as long as layered tips IMO. Triangle tips are the standard tips that come with Cokers. Coker also carries Talisman layered tips as well as some others.

When I ordered my Coker, I opted to pay a little extra and get Talisman Mediums put on my shafts. I figure for an extra 10 or 15 dollars per shaft, it will save me lots of time and money in the future b/c they will last longer and be more enjoyable. I have a Talisman on two of my cues at the moment. As far as layered tips go, I've tried Mooris, Tigers, and Talismans. Out of those three, Talismans have to be my favorite (with Tiger close behind). I thought the Mooris were extremely overrated and tended not to hold chalk very well and was prone to miscues, but like the other two they did last a long time and did not mushroom much if any. What I liked about the Talismans is that they are priced much better, held chalk much better, good feedback, almost never needs maintainance, and they last FOREVER! I would have also opted for Tiger Tips, but Coker does not carry them.

Well sorry about my endless ranting. I hope that I helped to answer some of your questions. Remember that these are my opinions on the subject and may or may not reflect the opinions/beliefs of others. Oh yeah feel free to ask me any other questions, even though I don't know squat. :D

Wow, those are some awesome cokers. Never seen a malachite coker, looks great. I also love the cue with the lighter wood window, and the holly/ivory star, that cue is gourgeous!!!:p

Notice how sharp the point is on the star, that is amazing. The window is most likely CNC, with the star being sharpened up by coker, looks amazing IMO.

the ligher wood is olivewood and we had two cues with olivewood points and windows. and all of the inlays are ivory and the shafts all had moori tips. i have sold all of those cokers with the exception of the two with malachite, one of which will have an ivory joint. those are going to be my playing cues. i should have more of the fancy "xs" cokers later.

Also, i have a question for you, i was wondering if you had ever seen a shaft like the one i received with my coker... If you look closely in some of my pictures, you can see the wood in one of the shafts has light bands going around and around the whole way down, it makes the shaft look really unique, and i get comments on it all the time. I was wondering how this comes about? Is it just random, or do you think it was made that way? The other shaft is plain, and does not have this feature.

wow, that almost looks like a curly maple shaft, but i think it's just banding. the shaft wood is random, but you got a real nice piece on that cue. my partner and i design the cues along with michi, we pick out the woods, the window, the inlays and we try to make every cue unique. then coker builds them for us. there is a story behind the "xs" tag, but i'm sworn to secrecy to protect the innocent!

I think those rings may be what they call compression rings in the wood. They are usually seen in pieces of maple that are very dense. Like Guy said kind of like curly maple, but not as dense. I think they are usually a sign of good shaft wood (well on top of having a high growth ring count and grain that runs straight down the shaft).

BTW have any of you guys tried a curly maple shaft? I know Coker makes them upon special request. I have seen cues that have them, but they seem to be a rarity. More dense and stiffer? How about purpleheart shaft? Michi was telling me how she made a purple shaft for her J/B cue. I bet that thing is hard and very stiff.....:D

could u tell me what woods are used in these cue's? they are SO nice, and what the red/brownish wrap is? they look AMAZING!!!! now i love cokers even more!!

i think i found my perfect design. the butt of the last coker (exept the ivory, as i dont want any on my cue), with the cocobola forarm of the first cue , 6 ebony points with 3 veneers like in the tuxedo. any idea how much this would cost +- to let coker make it?

the wood in the points and the windows is olivewood. you don't see olivewood, it's hard to find a nice piece with a lot of grain in it. i emailes this thread to michi coker so that she could see it. i'll have her price out a cue for you.

I have to say a thing or two as well. I really like Coker, the cues always look well designed and the quality looks awesome. Plus the price is good, you get a lot of cue for your money. It shows you dont have to pay a fortune to have a cue that looks like a million bucks. I have put their homepage on my bookmark and im on their site once a day and staring at one of the cues, i think if my better half lets me i will order one.:D

Hey, hotdogg....I have been thinking about trying a talisman tip but do they have a WB and a Pig skin tip???? If they do, which one do you use in med.???? I HAVE ALWAYS USED MOORI MED., OH I HAVE TRIED OTHERS, BUT FOR THE LAST 3 YEARS IT HAS BEEN A MOORI. I HAVE HEARD GOOD THINGS ABOUT TALISMAN AND AM THINKING OF TRYING ONE...SO WHICH IS IT YOU USE IF THEY HAVE WB AND PIG???

If you havnt tried a sniper, try to find someone with one and try it out, everyone seems to like them, i used one for a year, and it has alot of action!

Im using a moori med. right now :( i dont necessarily like it, but it gets the job done. Id also like to try a talisman pro medium or hard, heard very good things about them!

Also, you might want to check out "sumo" tips, also "Kamui" tips. Ive heard lots of good things about them but never tried them.

Just some suggestions

paul
