Coker vs. Gilbert vs. Whisler

I am a novice player looking to move into a higher quality Mid range pointed cue. The three makers I am looking at are the above. Coker, Gilbert and Whisler.

I am playing a McDermot with a melamine ferrule and Moori soft now and would like to move into a stiffer hitting cue with very good balance (I like the way S/W feels and hits for what it is worth. Can you imagine! ;-))

I also am concerned about the cue staying stable over time so the issue of how long the components are stablized is important.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Coker has just recently been added to the list.

I've had a couple of Gilbert's in the past and think they play great. I currently have a custom jump/break on order with him as well. I, however, have not played with cues from either of the other makers.

My $.02 for what it's worth, even though it's actual value is probably much less...lol.

I have a 60" cue I have for sale that supposedly hits like a Southwest, or so I been told. It does hit firm, but very very nicely. I love the way it plays and the only reason I am selling it is I have come into a financial crunch. It is wrapless with a cocobola handle and birdseye maple forearm and butt with cocobola rings at ABCDE. Asking 400 for it plus shipping with two shafts, moori tips on each shaft. Been cleaned up and plays nice as I said.

PM me if interested.

I have a Whisler. I like it and it hits well. Shaft is average deflection which most of us are use to. 2 month wait, last I heard anyways...

I've been playing with a 6-point bocote Coker for the past year. Love the hit, the balance, etc. Getting a leather wrap for it right now.

I'll say Go with the Gilbert .Nice stiff hit and also i've own about 10 gilberts in my time ...I've hit balls with a Coker b4 nice hit but The gilbert hits a lot better to me. My 2 cents..

I can't speak to Coker or Whistler haven never hit with them, but I would give Gilbert a high recommendation.

Thanks Shorty, but 58 is as long as I can use. I'm a little vertically challenged as well. ;-)

I just read a comment on the azcues site about a production line of Cokers in the fall. I wonder what that will do to the resale of custom made Cokers going forward? Resale is not my primary consideration but it is something I consider.

Whisler was suggested to me by a local player (but he plays a 9 point SW so there you go ;-) )

Gilbert was suggested by a local repair guy who really knows cues (who also plays a SW ;-) )

Am I detecting a trend here?? How much does it cost to get in line for a SW? I think I might be alive by delivery time... maybe....

Thanks all for your comments.

Thanks all for your comments.

It cost nothing to get on the waiting list, just call and tell them to add you. I take it from your nickname you're not young, but get on the list anyway. I'm 59 and I got on the Hercek waiting list (5-6 years). If I bubble to the top while I've still got money (ie. not retired) I can get one, if not, nothing lost being on the list. I was thinking of getting on the SW list too, even if you can't afford it by the time you get to the top, you can sell it immediately for a profit. Might need to take out a bridge loan though. :)

It does not cost anything. Give then a call and tell them you would like to order a cue. Then wait for about 7 years.

I have a SW and also on the list for another. It is a nice cue. Good playing and has a nice solid feeling. It took some time to get use to it. When I first got it I was not that impressed but it grew on me. I am now shooting with a Jensen. As soon I shot the first shot with it felt as if was a extension of my arm. On a personal basis take the names off of both, and don't tell anyone what they are and I think most would chose the Jensen as a better feeling cue.

Younger than you but not by much ;-)

How detailed on your requirements do you have to get to get on the list?

Hercek is local to me and so is Ed Young. Those two and SW would be my three lists. I'll just use my first year of Social Security to pay for it. Oh wait. Bush has plans for that already :-(

.

I understand from a Coker dealer that the comment on the azcues site is referring to a batch of "made to spec cues" and not a Coker production cue.

Original comment on the page was

"This beautiful personalized ebony and purpleheart cue was made for me by Michi and Tom Coker. It's not for sale but look for future announcements about a new line of limited Coker "Special Production" cues coming this fall."

Didn't want to be a rumor monger. Guess I just misunderstood the phrasing.

In fact I just looked at the site and the comment is no longer on the Coker page.

Sorry if I ruffled any feathers.

All you have to do is get on the list initially. When you bubble up the list you can specify.

Oh yeah, Bush has plans for my $ocial $ecurity too, but if he didn't somebody else would. You'd probably be well advised to practice the same phrase I am for my "retirement" ... "Would you like fries with that burger sir?"

Yeah. I'm working on mine to "Welcome to Walmart!"
