How important are collets? I have a quiet router set up with no collets. The collets Im looking at list for $81.00. Brand is NSK. What is everyone using? If I go cheap here will my results suffer?

Bubs, have you checked with Unique for collets? I am pretty sure you can get genuine NSK cheaper than $81, the last time i checked.
Hey Bubs, check your messages? And BTW, that shaft that you make is great! If a customer likes that Plink sound it is perfect, and a monster of a break shaft too! Better for the breaks than purpleheart . My hats off to you man.

Just a guess but I would say "probably". You want an accurate collet. Cost doesn't necessarily correlate to accurate but, as most have found, higher price usually equates to higher accuracy. For something as critical as a collet on a spindle running that quickly, if it isn't pretty much dead nuts, you'll get vibrations that will make the finished product suffer and destroy the bearings quicker. The 1/8 inch collet on my Precise grinder cost over 125.00.

any good collet setup has a key so the collet stays in the same rotational orientation. On routers they don't do this, but just simply marking it with a marker pen will help alot.
Ofcourse some come with the inside taper not running true, so no matter how much you spend on the collet, it won't be right.
We have a mill with a slightly bent spindle. So we get new holders that are smaller than we want, mount a boring bar in the mill, and bore out the holder in situation. It makes the hole true to the run of the machine every time.

if you shop around you can get the NSK collets for $65,maybe cheaper, but that is what i paid.as good as NSK is i can't imagine going with something generic to save $30 or so.

Hi.

I did go for US Shoptools Ultra Precision.
T.I.R - 0.0002. (Edit, I knocked in wrong number)

I'm not sure what NSK have, but the Ultras has worked for me..
