Colored Chalk Users

Hello AZers,

Is there any fact to the use of colored chalk (other than blue) being bad for the tables. Other than it shows up on the cloth? I've heard something along the lines of it being of a different grit and therefore it'll wear the cloth down quicker. I call BS on that.

I use brown chalk and have been for a long time. I have a big box of this stuff and I plan to continue using it. I like the fact that my tools still looks like it did when I bought it. For light cleaning purposes, it's a breeze. I know it's in the grain of the wood even after cleaning, but still, not bad. (vs. blue)

I feel that I should be allowed to use whatever color/brand/grit or chalk I so choose 'cuz, after all, I am paying for the use of the table. That's as a patron. As a competitor, if they disallow certain colors, then so be it. But that's the price I'll have to pay in order for me to participate in that event.

So folks, lets have it. What are your thoughts on this?

Thanks for your time and input,
xJ

If you're playing at home you have the right to use whatever you want. In public, you should use whatever the room approves of. They aren't your tables. I've worked in a pool room. Using anything in that room other than blue or green was frowned on. If you ask, that's one thing. If you just go ahead and use whatever you want without asking, well, that's another. I've seen people come into a place with green Simonis on the tables and start playing with red chalk. Disgraceful.

Well, many people see that chalk other than being blue or green shows up on the cloth, just like powder users having hand chalk everywhere on the table. It can get distracting or to some annoying because they prefer to not be able to see the chalk. I don't give a rat's a$$. Blue and green just doesn't show up as obvious as other colored chalk, and no, it would not wear the cloth down faster, that's BS. Chalk is chalk.

I used to use tan color chalk because like you said, it cleans off much nicer on your equipment. I now use blue chalk or whatever damn chalk they have at the pool hall. I got tired of carrying my own chalk and having to look for the SOB when someone moves it off the table while they shoot.

IMHO, many will tell you to not use it and blah blah blah because that's what everyone else say, don't pay any attention to it. Unless the pool hall owner decides to come and tell you to stop using the brown chalk, use it all you like. What other people have to deal with is their problem, no one is going to be cleaning your equipment for you. No, I Don't care what you guys say, I already switched over to blue chalk from my tan chalk and now I have bluing all over my OB2, but I also don't care as long as the shaft is smooth and not dirty, a little bluing is fine with me. If you are really playing with your cue, they are going to get dirty regardless. I just stop giving a damn and just started shooting lol.

happy shooting! :)

There are several halls that I frequent. The one that seems to have a problem with my chalk is the one that has the dirtiest tables of them all. I mean, I throw up maybe four racks and my bridge hand is filthy. And I mean filthy. I know I'm not resolving the issue, but instead compounding the problem. But in a sense, it's kinda like an eye for an eye.

Unfortunately, this so happens to be the biggest pond for action.

On a side note, I DO CLEAN my own table after I'm done at the halls that have clean tables prior to my using it. Leave no evidence that I was ever even there. =)

Keep them coming peoples.

Personally, I think anyone who uses chalk colors like red and brown on a green or blue table should have there left hand removed. It makes such a mess! However I also agree that the room owners should keep GOOD and appropriately colored chalk readily available for the players. Especially if they are picky about what's used.

I always keep a few pieces of green AND blue handy. Chances are very good that any table I play on will be coverd with cloth one color or the other. However, if the cloth was red, tan, or any other unusual (read ghastly) color I would not dare to use blue or green. We actually have a guy around here that likes to use brown because he thinks it sharks his oponnent because it looks like he doesn't have chalk on the tip. I know.. ridiculous! but he seems to think it works. LOL

for the record RED is the absolute worst!

The difference in the 'bite' on the cue ball is real.
The difference in the dust left on the table is also real.

I use a gray colored chalk by Silver Cup - have for many years.
My chalk is gray - my money is green. End of story.

Thank you all for your responses.

As for 'bite', I don't seem to be experiencing any difference. I have no problems laying down the junk on the CB.

As for dust showing up on the table cloth... if the cloth is all worn down to that lighter shade of green, I find that it blends in quite nicely. As for the hall that I've mentioned earlier, their tables happen to be in that shade.

I play plenty. And I tend to keep my things in good to great shape. I choose to use tan chalk in case I sell any of my cues. For resale purposes, it tend to help out a bit.

Keep them coming peeps,

To me this is the same as someone that tells you not to buy a car with white seats because they get dirty faster. The dirt and chalk is still there if you see it or not.

I don't see where blue is a better color on green?

I use tan/orange. I do this to keep others from "taking" my chalk. I have heard some players complain about the mark on the CB. Don't see where it is more distractive than blue or the red spots on the Measle Ball.

If blue is the color than don't make or sell anything else.

People who use red chalk on any table other than one with red felt needs to have their finger nails pulled out very slowly. My daughter-in-law used red chalk on my table ONCE and after she figured out how long it took to clean, she decided blue or green was a better choice.

It may have also helped that I told her that Tweeten puts nanobots in their green and blue chalk only to give the player much more "grip" on the ball. They also assist in not allowing the chalk to fall out it's holder. :)

I'm surprised any commercial room worth it's salt would allow you to use orange chalk. If you don't want people taking it, keep track of it.

Orange chalk? YUCK.

You do NOT have to worry about me EVER taking your chalk :D. Except to maybe throw it away, certain that it was an oversight and that someone didn't mean to use that stuff. If you are telling me that somehow "orange" blends in on a blue/green cloth as well as blue or green (even if they are used on tables opposite their color) I need my eyes checked in a bad way

I can see how red or orange chalk would be a b***h to clean up.

That being said, I have tournament blue cloth on my table at home and I use the standard blue Masters chalk. I actually like that it's not the same color because when I'm cleaning the cloth, I can tell that I got everything out of the cloth...

Well, at least what I can see.

They make different color chalk to match cloth color. If you're playing on cloth that matches your chalk, fine. If not, that's a horse of another color.

What gets me the most is the total lack of respect of people that think "This is what I use so screw you"

No wonder this game can't be brought out of the gutter.

That's fair enough, and I agree to a point. There are plenty of rooms with green cloth and blue chalk. But the brown, red, orange, whatever on anything other than the same colored cloth should be a no-no. I don't care how much elbow grease you put into it a brown chalk line does not just brush out of blue or green cloth.

My favorite room is owned by a former Johnson City Champ, a traditionalist. He's picky about his tables, and will allow any chalk as long as the color is close to Master Blue. At his room I use my Blue Diamond or Balabushka. I regularly play on two home tables, one red cloth and one tan. For those I carry Tan Master chalk. I'm OK with the table owner setting the rules, with one exception-don't ever make me use red chalk. I don't ever want to clean a mess like this again.
