Combo's

As an Instructor teaching a beginner during their progression would you teach them to play combo's or to work around them ?

the reason I ask is because when I first started out I played nine ball I was taught to be run out player and unless it was pretty dead work around the combos(breaking them out, playing short side shape or just safe) and I think it has kind of hurt me later on playing 8 ball and one pocket

now with most of the pool rooms having ball cleaners good quality balls and cloth I think it has made it more realistic to shoot off angle combos and not shy away from them like I have done all of these years

love to hear your thoughts,

Bill...As you iknow, a good instructor will first concentrate on helping develop an accurate and repeatable stroke. After that I see nothing wrong with teaching the principles of pocketing combos.

Beginners need to understand that combos are usually harder than normal shots. Sometimes they are easier. In any case, they need to know how to play them and they need to practice them especially if they hope to compete on smaller tables where things are crowded.

It's not hard to come up with positions where the combo is the best shot even for a beginner.
