Commercial idea...

It used to be that the BCA Junior Championships involved scholarships (if I'm not mistaken, Charlie Williams won some scholarship money that way - incidentally, I wonder what happened to it since he didn't use it?). I agree, as mentioned by legions of people over the years, the best way to increase pool's fan base is to start young, even younger than college. Other sports have Little League, Tumbling, PeeWee Soccer....of course, these sports have consistent rules and equipment, so these would have to be standardized for pool (at least for the purposes of the rec classes) - as discussed ad nauseum on numerous other threads! :p

It is to my understanding that the BCA had a "pilot" program with The Boys and Girls Clubs in several states in 2001. If I recall correctly, the whole idea was to promote pool to the participants of the Boys and Girls Clubs. There was never any further indication on how this program fared, wheter it was extended or dropped...at least not that I could find. However, I have not extensivley researched it in the past several months. :(

landshark and Kerry,

The BCA Junior National program used to incorporate scholarships into the prize fund. They quit doing so about 3 years ago. They said that not enough of the winners were using the money. As far as I know only a handful have used theirs. I know Stacee Adkins, Kara Wroldson, Tiffany Nelson, Michelle Rakin, and myself have used theirs. I'm not sure how many of the boys did. When I went to use my money I was told we have a certain amount of time to use it. If not used, it is put back into the fund. The BCA's new way of doing things is to have an essay contest. High school seniors with an interest in pool and the right grades can send in an essay and get up to $1000 in scholarship money.

It is very unfortunate that more kids didn't use their scholarship money. It is an opportunity that alot of kids don't have. But to each their own.

Take care,
Sarah

you've just pointed out one of the biggest differences in men and women pool players in my opinion. the women for the most part, do something else. go to school, work, take care of a family as well as play pool. as where the guys all they do is play pool play pool play pool play pool and play more pool. another aspect of mens pool that could be detrimental(sp) to the progression of pool.

Sarah,

I guess what I was trying to say was have the scholarships set up like baseball/ softball scholarships...100% of your tuition, books, and room/board is paid and you in return play for the college team. At least the BCA is doing something to promote the sport and education, but I would think they would want to further the sport by endorsing pool to colleges. They could have it kind of set up similar to the APA (only because I know the APA's format), where as you have a "team" that represents your college...5-8 people...it could be handicapped (or not) and you play the other college teams in your class (different classes depending on type and location of your college...i.e, NYU and UVA maybe in the same class, but the college I went to would be in a different class...like their other team sports are set up.) The schools would pay for the scholarships, not the BCA. But, the BCA could help by marketing the colleges and help them get set up...maybe do a little research at least to see if it is a viable idea.

I'm sure most of you have seen the cell phone commercial for T-Mobile! The one with the phone that you can type on; with Snoop asking about fabric softner!!

Zim

instead of the guy coming out of the crowd have the opponents phone ring, he answers,
looks at the picture then busts out laughing. everyone has a great laugh and the current
player shuts off his phone and makes the shot anyway.
