I just watched Steve Davis and Steve Mizerak playing a challenge where they played straight pool and snooker and it struck me that billiards is one of the very few sports where people get to become world class in their particular discipline but they can readily play with others in other billiards games.
Snooker players can play all pool games, pool players can try their hand at snooker, carom players can try pool and vice versa, Pyramid players can play pool, I think it's great that there are so many facets to billiard sports.
You won't ever see a tennis player taking on a table tennis player or the table tennis player challenging a badminton player nor the world's best croquet player challenging the world's best golfer.
I have been around the world and really truly LUCKY to have experienced so many variations of billiards being played. From the last pocket 8 ball played in the bars in Germany, to the billiards played with pins and super super tight pocket in Italy, to carom games in Turkey, to Killer in England, to the four ball carom game on the pool table in Taiwan and more. It's amazing to me that there is such diversity in billiards around the world.
Some people complain about the lack of standards and different rules and surely this is a problem for professionals, especially in pool. But I think we should celebrate the incredible array of cue sports that exist.
