Compare shaft tapers

This is probably a strange request, and I did a quick search, but I couldn't find anything, so please forgive me and point me in the right direction if I missed something.

I'd like to find a reliable listing of the standard shaft tapers for a bunch of different cue makers. It'll likely be limited to production cues and after market shafts, but that's okay for my purposes. Does anything like this exist?

I'd also be interested to see pictures of the different shafts side by side that showed the contrast in taper, so if anyone knows where I can find that, I'd appreciate a nudge in that direction, too.

I'm really just trying to educate myself more than anything else...

Good luck on that quest. You may be able to get most cuemakers to state whether they make a conical taper or a pro taper or both but to get them to be more definitive as to what the measurements are every inch is asking a little much, although I would love to know the numbers for any cue maker.

Cuemakers

don't just spill their guts to anyone that asks. Some of those things are private, and their own method of doing it.

but: basically,
1) Conical taper - Used on break cues, old house cues a lot. Shaft is a long cone shape.
2) Straight taper - European reference - stays same diameter for most of the shaft. Snooker cues are tapered this way a lot.
3) Pro taper - runs 13" usually
4) Extra Pro taper - 15" usually
4) 15"-17" - by request. (sometimes called Super Pro Taper).

Of course, the taper will feel different depending on what millimeter the ferrule and tip are. (shaft diameter at the end of the shaft.)

Usually, just stroke a cue with Pro taper, and then one with Extra Pro taper, and decide which feels best for you.

I don't believe there's a taper that "stays same diameter for most of the shaft".

negative. snooker cues are conically tapered.
 
actually . . .

There is a taper that stays very close to the same diameter for most of the shaft. One of the best ever is playing with a shaft like this the last I knew. Also there was once a stick that had the shaft basically the same diameter if not the same diameter for the entire length of the shaft. It was an interesting cue and one of the better playing house cues in the old pool room it was in back in the early seventies. Never saw another but this one had a major shoulder where the handle section joined the shaft. I have considered duplicating it many times just for grins. With some of the shaft blanks available today it should play just fine.

I do agree with worriedbeef though, the snooker shafts are usually conically tapered, or at least the ones I have seen were.
